WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP
BARNTONS PHARMACY AND TRAVEL CLINIC COLLABORATIVE COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY CARE
B
arntons Pharmacy and Travel Clinic have set an outstanding example of what can be achieved when pharmacy integrates
deeply with local healthcare teams to deliver timely, compassionate and expert care, particularly for society’s most vulnerable.
Led by Pharmacist Director Leanne Carey, the Barntons team has demonstrated a truly innovative and collaborative spirit, working seamlessly with GP surgeries, palliative care networks, Community Pharmacy Scotland and NHS Education for Scotland. Their efforts have created a network of care that has directly improved patient experiences in both palliative care and minor illness management.
A standout aspect of their partnership work has been their involvement in the palliative care on- call service, which pharmacist Glenn joined in May 2024. His commitment has extended beyond normal working hours, providing crucial out-of- hours medication access to patients across Edinburgh. In practice, this means patients and

families receive vital treatments like Alfentanil spray exactly when needed, sparing them the stress and uncertainty of supply delays during already difficult times. As part of the local palliative care network, the pharmacy prioritises these prescriptions, ensuring they are ready for collection or delivery alongside antibiotics and other urgent medications.
The pharmacy’s close integration with local surgeries and healthcare teams goes further. Barntons has implemented the RPS Daffodil Standards and delivered palliative training to all staff, from pharmacists to delivery drivers, ensuring the whole team is confident in managing sensitive cases with dignity and care. Glenn’s leadership has extended to public platforms as well, presenting at a parliamentary event to share how pharmacy can enhance palliative care through partnership. All the staff at Barntons are now confident in identifying, dispensing and ordering palliative medications to support the pharmacy’s patients.
In parallel, the team has championed the Pharmacy First Plus service, working to fill critical gaps in GP access. Their clinic-based consultations support a growing number of patients with minor conditions who might otherwise face long waits for GP appointments - or worse, unnecessary A&E visits. Barntons provides fast and effective assessments for conditions like sore throats, chest infections and suspected STIs. With services ranging from clinical examinations (sounding chests, checking oxygen saturation and blood pressure) to developing treatment plans or referring to GPs when needed, the pharmacy has become the first point of care for many patients in the area.
The team’s Teach and Treat model has further widened their impact, providing training and mentoring for Independent Prescribers (IPs) and post-registration pharmacists. This commitment to upskilling has not only expanded service capacity at Barntons, but is building a stronger, more confident pharmacy workforce across the region. The team regularly hosts shadowing
