PROJECTS
The façade of Tower A is clad in glazed ceramic tiling, a contemporary version of tiling typically used throughout Taiwan and Japan as a low- maintenance façade suited to the humid climate. Balconies, planted with trees and shrubs, break up the surface and add greenery to the building exterior. Tower B is enveloped in an aluminium mesh façade that acts as a sunshade, helping to passively cool the building from the heat in the summer months. The development’s greenery is easy to maintain as all planters and planted areas are easy to access without special equipment. Tower B features large sky terraces, 17 metres in width, a span that requires steel beams, while Tower A, with a shorter span of 13.5 metres, uses reinforced concrete.
LOCATION AND CONTEXT
The mixed-use development is located in the densely developed and vibrant Nantun District of Taichung, Taiwan’s second-largest city with a population of over 2.8 million, just outside of the city core. The development’s site is made up of two rectangular plots, one facing the main city thoroughfare, Gongyi Road, and the other facing Daying Street, a quieter secondary street. The mixed-use district is characterised by restaurants and retail, as well as offices and residential buildings. Sky Green contributes to the vibrancy of the neighbourhood with its active street frontage that houses retail shops. The residential portion of the development begins on level four, providing a relaxed, peaceful living environment away from the hustle and bustle of the streetscape.
IMPACT
The architectural strategies of Sky Green break away from the existing building fabric of the city. They are an adaptation of WOHA’s Singaporean, tropical model to a subtropical, seismically active location, proving that the model is appealing and adaptable to a substantial portion of the globe. The building is a prototype that represents the city’s aspirations towards fostering sustainable sociable living in a high-density urban environment. Sky Green was used as a project reference during the conceptualisation of a new local city planning regulation, launched in March 2019, incentivising the incorporation of sky gardens and lush greenery in high-rise developments. As the first high-density development in Taichung that also provides high amenity with its generous recreational facilities and ample integrated green spaces, the project has proven to be successful, and has become the new benchmark. To date, 27 new projects in the city are closely modelled on the Sky Green typology. This is an encouraging development, as the positive climatic and biodiversity impact of this approach is only realised to its full extent when it is applied across the city.
