OF OUR TRADE

WELL DONE TO DERBY PHV DRIVER, ABDUL MAJID, FOR SAVING THE LIFE OF HIS PASSENGER

Abdul Majid, who works for Albatross Cars, had to act quickly when one of his four passengers fell down after he left the vehicle. Unfortunately, there were no ambulances and there was a considerable wait for the next one. It was critical that the passenger was taken to hospital as soon as possible as it was potentially a matter of life and death. Abdul took control of the situation and he rushed the patient to the hospital immediately, calming the other passengers and skilfully navigating the traffic to get to the

hospital quickly. He then stayed there for most of the day, giving emotional support to ensure that

the passenger (and stranger) made a full recovery. As a show of gratitude, the passenger generously sent a Thank You card to Albatross for Abdul, along with £100 to show his appreciation! Albatross wanted to highlight this story, as too often our trade gets a bad reputation with a few bad stories making the headlines. But the vast majority of our drivers are some of the most hard- working, genuine and honest people out there, as exemplified by Abdul Majid.

WEYMOUTH MAN SAVED BY PUB MANAGER AND CABBIE, RICKY CLEVERLEY, WHO GAVE HIM CPR

A man whose life was saved by an heroic pair says they have become like a second family. Andy Lane suffered a harrowing near-death experience just over a year ago on August 12, 2021 when he collapsed outside his Weymouth flat. He was saved by the combined efforts of Dawn Maybery, manager of the nearby Waterloo pub, and taxi driver, Ricky Cleverley. The pair ran over to give Andy life-saving CPR for 20 minutes until the emergency services arrived. Andy’s collapse was caused by a bleed on the brain and he is continuing to recover from his ordeal but considers himself lucky to be alive. “I was lucky to have Dawn and Ricky around,” he said. “If I had gone into my flat I would be gone. Since I have come back from the

hospital it’s like I have a new family with these two..” Following the life-saving inter- vention, the community at The Waterloo pub in Grange Road took it upon themselves to raise more than £2,443 to install a defibrillator for the community. Additional funds were donated towards The Wessex Neurological Centre at Southampton General Hospital. Andy, Dawn and Ricky are now calling for more defibrillators to be

installed around Weymouth. “Many people have commented on how necessary the defibrillator is since it was installed, in fact, it almost saw use eight days after it was installed, and we think they should be on every street,” said Dawn. Ricky added: “Andy has made a miraculous recovery - when we first met him in the Waterloo Pub after he was out of the hospital he couldn’t even walk. We have watched his recovery and it is like night and day with how he is now. “We want to see a defibrillator in every area of Weymouth, then two, then three in the bigger areas so we have them on hand.” The trio hope to host another fundraiser at the pub to raise money to install two more defibrillators in Weymouth.
