TESTS CARRIED OUT IN LUTON TEST REVEAL 45 OFFENCES BEING UNCOVERED
A joint operation targeting taxis and PHVs in Luton resulted in 45 offences being uncovered. The operation on Gipsy Lane, Luton on 15 August saw 32 taxi/PHVs stopped and checked. These included: TfL PHV x 15, Three Rivers x 1, LBC PHV x 6, CBC x 1, Watford HC x 1, Welwyn HC x 2, St Albans PHV x 1, Northants PHV x 1, South Cambs
PHV x 2, Dacorum PHV x 1, Bucks PHV x 1.
Bedfordshire Police, working with DVSA Enforcement, Luton Council Licensing, TfL and HMRC have reported that eight drivers were suspended, including thee of the six Luton PHVs checked. Five tyre offences were also uncovered, and nineteen drivers reported for not displaying their badges and other offences.
SAFETY AND LICENSING OPERATION LAUNCHED IN YORK
A dedicated operation looking at the safety and licensing of taxis in York was been launched by police on Saturday 13 August. North Yorks Police officers were assisted by Special Constabulary and Roads Policing Officers to execute ‘Operation Edge’. Key partners also worked on the
operation which included the City of York Council and the DVSA. Several vehicles were stopped and a number were found to be have serious vehicle defects. These defects included illegal tyres, defective breaks and one taxi was operating with a faulty suspension. Any breaches of licence or
mechanical defects found were dealt with. Officers issued several prohibition notices, fixed penalties and repair notices. PC Dave Ellison said: “We identifed several unroadworthy taxis which could have caused a serious accident if they’d continued to operate.
LIVERPOOL LICENSING OFFICERS HAVE A BUSY WEEKEND OF INSPECTIONS
On Friday night, 19 August, Liverpool City Council licensing, working with Merseyside Local Policing Team, conducted roadside compliance inspections to check the safety and legality of taxis/PHVs operating in Liverpool city centre. Illegal tyres, drivers with no ID badges, incorrect signage and HCVs with no card readers were among the defects found which resulted in vehicle suspensions. They were pleased to report that a majority of taxis passed all checks. Forty six vehicles were stopped:

• 2 will be reported for not carrying ID badges
• 3 stop searches were carried out for drug offences
• 14 were issued with defect notices • 6 were suspended from operating
• 1 driver was reported for driving without due care and attention. On 20 August, licensing officers worked in the city centre with colleagues from Wolverhampton licensing. A number of drivers will be reported for various offences such as PHVs plying for hire, licence plates not affixed and no ID badges.
