Will Tesla’s ultra-rapid supercharging hubs work for on-demand drivers?

After a limited pilot of 15 Tesla supercharger sites, opened up to non-Tesla drivers since May, the promise of all 98 Tesla superhubs becoming available to non- Tesla drivers from September, is a juicy prospect.
So, if all that extra premium public charging is opened up, is it now time to consider going electric?
Will Tesla superchargers make the difference?
The Tesla supercharger network is the crown jewel of Tesla ownership, it’s greatest asset, the reason why their Model 3 is the biggest selling car in the UK, and why Tesla is valued at more than double the rest of all car manufacturers combined.
More reliable chargers, less dwell-time, lower cost
EV fence-sitters put off by reports of a patchwork of chargers created by a myriad UK public network providers will like Tesla's Supercharger network for the same reasons Tesla drivers do, multiple, reliable, ultra- rapid chargers per location, and low cost.
These reasons are key for high mileage, on-demand drivers, due to three main issues:
• Some topping up may be needed using public charging
• Poor accessibility and reliability of non-Tesla public charging networks
• The lack of home and work-place parking, with cheap overnight rates
DIY - Anyone?
In my previous PHTM article, I presented a major opportunity for operators with depots, and parking, to do as Tesla has done - i.e. provide your own exclusive charging facilities, become an energy reseller, and create your own scalable demand through the adoption of EVs.
There are only three options, aside from charging at home and supplementing public charging:
1. Keep using ICE’s and hybrids, and risk fuel price volatility, further government emission regulations, and EV competition
2. Develop a charging strategy and infrastructure for depots
3. Like petrol stations, use public charging, including Tesla supercharger hubs.

Charging access simply requires downloading the Tesla app, which now allows access to non-Tesla drivers. The app informs you of your nearest Tesla chargers, and how many are available. You just register with your payment details to start charging.
What is the cost to charge?
The cost to charge is c. 60p per kW to non-Tesla drivers, and c. 28p per kW for Tesla owners. But non-Teslas can access the same reduced Tesla tariff by subscribing to their monthly membership for £10.99. (This can be cancelled, and reinstated as easily as a Netflix account).
Is the membership worth it?
The short answer is a resounding - Yes. The membership fee, and reduced cost per kWh is really well-suited to those needing a minimum 40 kW per month, which is typically good for around 100 miles of range. Something PH and taxi drivers would exceed frequently.
When compared to other inferior and slower charging networks, Tesla charging membership represents amazing value.
It's incredible for public ultra-rapid charging to be c. 28p per kW, when even domestic standard variable electricity prices will rise to 60p in October.
As part of this, Tesla is also introducing “dynamic pricing” in order to reduce queues at peak times.
Supercharging compared to petrol and diesel
By using superchargers at a fraction of the cost of fuel, even with a £10.99 membership, you'll save money.
Those with high mileage fleets, and drivers who haven't made up your minds yet should keep an open mind about the market that's rapidly evolving to support the switch to electric.
