THE BERNIE THE BOOK COLUMN AMERICA TO DELIVER ON GOLF’S BIGGEST STAGE

BUT IT IS DOWN TO THE RAMS TO TAKE THE BIGGEST PRIZE

IT’S BEEN THREE LONG YEARS since Europe wrested the Ryder Cup from America at Paris National. In fact wrested doesn’t quite do justice to the manner of Europe’s domination that year. Then, the postman delivered as he so often did (Poulter) and the inspired combination of Tommy Fleet- wood and Francesco Molinari coined the acronym Moliwood as they went unbeaten. This month sees the Covid-postponed Ryder Cup on American soil on the 21st. The AMERICANS are a top-priced 4/7 to take back the trophy and despite Europe having this great unity, I can see no conclusion other than an American victory. Of course 4/7 isn’t a working man’s price but there are a raft of alternative markets for the social gambler, not least all firms will be offering top points scorer, both overall and for his team and therefore I would advocate a player who is likely to play the maximum number of games (five) and one who has got a good fit with a reliable partner. One man who qualifies on both counts is JORDAN SPIETH who will be around 6/1 in the top USA team scorer and about 10/1 in the overall. Whereas that is tinged with luck, the score is not and I predict victory for the United States of around 17-11 at 11/2.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Staying in the States, the new NFL season begins on September 12 culminating in the “greatest show on turf” on the first weekend in February 2022. As mentioned in a previous column, last year the inspired decision by the management of Tampa Bay in recruiting a legend in Tom Brady paid dividends, resulting in Superbowl victory for the Bucs. On the same theme this year might be the time for the LA RAMS at a massive 16/1 in some lists (general 14/1). They have recruited equally wisely in paying through the nose for future Hall of Famer, Matthew Stafford, as their quarterback. The last two years has seen the Rams as nearly-men as their superb defence was not matched by their offensive frailties. Not so this year and I predict a deep run into the play-offs for LA. While you can get 16/1 for the Superbowl, you can also get 7/1 for the Conference and 9/5 for the Division of NFC West. Back with confidence.

SEPTEMBER 2021

My other fancy on the other side of the NFL, in the slightly more difficult AFC, is the BUFFALO BILLS at 12/1 to come of age, not just in the AFC East but also in the Conference. For those who are chasing a villa in the Maldives, my selections for the Divisions are as follows:

AFC East AFC North AFC West AFC South NFC East NFC North NFC South NFC West

Buffalo Bills

Cleveland Browns Kansas City Chiefs Indianapolis Colts Dallas Cowboys Minnesota Vikings New Orleans Saints LA Rams

4/6

33/20 5/14 7/5

11/10 5/2 3/1 9/5

Last year I correctly predicted five from seven selections – close but no cigar. The 8-timer pays a shade over 1,184/1, you have been told.

HORSE RACING

September sees the final classic of the British flat racing season – the St Leger over a sapping 13

⁄4 miles on Townmoor,

Doncaster. Charlie Appleby has had a stellar year with his three-year-old colts winning the Derby and King George with Adayar and the Irish Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris with HURRICANE LANE. One will contest the St Leger in September, while the other will head to France for the Prix De l’Arc de Triomphe.

Which Godolphin horse will contest which race? Only Charlie knows. And as he is not be taking my calls, it’s a matter of opinion. I believe that Hurricane Lane

will run in the St Leger (current price 6/4) but also use the St Leger as his prep for the Arc, where he is available at 10/1. Watch the declarations, but I would have a speculative punt at 10/1 to wind up in Paris.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Finally, the group stages of the Champions League are about to start and it doesn’t take a genius to realise that a Messi-led PSG are clear favourites this year at a very tight 11/4. My initial fancy thought is LIVERPOOL at 9/1.

Good punting…
