Well, what an eventful time we’re having! Welcome to Autumn properly… falling leaves, flooded streets, Halloween… dare we say it, some development or other in that shower which is Parliament regarding the dreaded B-word? After all, we’re supposed to turn into pumpkins on the 31st as regards the Brexit deadline, but the old adage “a week is a long time in politics” has now been shortened to “a day”! What will happen in between? What an almighty mess!

That can also be said of a few other activities within local councils as well, but back to that in a bit. Of course the head- line-stealer in the industry this month is the two-month ‘extension’ to Uber’s London PH operator licence. Plenty to read about that little gem, both on the front page and in Opinion. Then form your own opinion, and we’d love to hear from you about that… and of course anything else you care to contact us about in this crazy industry at the moment.

The NPHTA has been mega-active over the past four weeks, as you can read about on our activity page. Take your pick of locations – Stevenage, Liverpool, Bury, York, Basildon. All good stuff, and substantive movements towards a common goal: the setting of minimum national standards, and the obliteration of out-of-area intruders to the detriment of legitimately licensed drivers and businesses that want no more than survival, and a reasonable equitably-gained income (aka level playing field… a phrase that is used throughout the industry and not taken enough notice of by regulators and the public alike).

We’ve taken the bull by the horns in a couple of other features as well: we look at the annoying, concerning and costly issue of drivers being put out of work when their DBS check hasn’t come back in time. There is also a magnifying glass looking into the state of play within the Bury Council licensing area: the trade is up in arms big style – read all about it inside.

By contrast, have a look at the result gained by the local Basildon association on the NPTHA Activity page: this is the best type of example of a “how-to” we could hope to portray, as regards getting things done and keeping communication lines open between the trade and their licensing authority.

There are of course our regular departments as well: Company Profile, Know Your Rights, Taxi Law Explained, Round (and round!) the Councils, Let’s Get Social and Uber-wide, everything you’ve come to read and love. So you’d best get stuck in! and have a good read.

The staff of PHTM and the National Private Hire and Taxi Association wish to pay tribute to Ron Pearson, who passed away on 26 September. ‘Big Ron’ was a very active member of the hackney trade in Birmingham, and an even more active TGWU representative on their behalf. He and Bryan Roland – also sadly deceased – were members of the Government’s Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee for many years. Ron was always so very supportive of the industry locally and nationally, never missed attending every PHTM Expo, and he will be sadly missed by many. Any donations will be gladly received by the St Giles Hospice, Whittington, Lichfield, Staffordshire.
