IN THE NEWS...IN THE NEWS.. CRACKDOWN ON MANCHESTER DRIVERS ILLEGALLY

PICKING UP - 30 CABBIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO COURT

Thirty private hire drivers have been prosecuted as part of an operation to clamp down on them illegally pick- ing up fares on the street. The Manchester Evening News re- ports that Manches- ter town hall last year launched an operation to clamp down on drivers ply- ing for hire. Manchester council says it is ‘proud to have some of the most stringent poli- cies and standards for drivers and vehi- cles in the country’. “However drivers working for different local

Mr Baig’s licence was suspended while repairs were done. It was discovered that he continued to work in the city cen- tre picking up fares illegally. Baig, of Stockport, pleaded guilty and was given a 12- month conditional discharge, ordered to pay £200 costs and a £20 victim surcharge for having no insurance and

into a lay-by near the ground before picking up a passen- ger. When ques- tioned, driver Adnan Khalil initially told officers he was pick- ing up a friend. Raja Farrukh Jamil, 44, was reported by a black cab driver in Manchester city cen- tre last July. He was suspected of illegal- ly plying for hire. Our enforce- ment officers are diligent in their work and we are grateful to have the support of the majority of law abiding drivers on our streets. “Manchester council has set the bench- mark in the north west for the stan- dards of our taxi fleet.”
