THE BERNIE THE BOOK COLUMN PAGE HEADER

THE LONG WINTER AHEAD CAN BE LIT UP BY TV NIGHTS

It’s a bit of a catch all this month with an analysis of where our ante-posts are standing as we hope and pray for monetary riches.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL We’ve practically reached the half way stage of the regular season and some things are becoming clearer. My preseason fancy (see September’s column) of the DETROIT LIONS is looking good. I hope they have not peaked too early, but at present they are the standout team in the NFC. Tipped up at 14/1, they are now 13/2, over half that original price. If you’ve not backed them yet, then now is the time to do so. Incidentally, my 8 fancies for the 8 divisions are going strong, with my teams either leading or sharing top spot in 6 of those. We won’t dwell on the Jets however!!

Meanwhile, things are afoot in KANSAS. Bidding for an unprecedented three-peat (don’t you just love Americana), Kansas, currently the only undefeated team in the whole league at 7:0, are busy recruiting before the free agency deadline as they have some long term injuries. Last week they traded for a top- notch wide receiver in DeAndre Hopkins, giving draft pickups to Tennessee, and this week, they have shelled out on a serious pass rusher from the Pats in Josh Uche. I think Andy Reid has made his intentions clear. Ignore the 9/2 now at your peril!!

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE What’s happening at the Nou Camp?? BARCELONA resurgent and now six points clear in La Liga after hammering Real Madrid 4-0 in the Bernabéu, fresh from destroying Bayern in the Champions League. Take the 12/1 currently available now and see if a German coach and a young academy team can once again reach Europe’s summit.

WINTER SPORTS 1 - SNOOKER The landscape has changed with dark nights, likely incessant rain and alphabetically named storms of varying intensity. So too winter sport, with horse racing starting in some cases before noon, and evening entertainment a choice between Strictly, I’m a Celebrity and Ice Dancing without Philllip Schofield.

PHTM NOVEMBER 2024

Thankfully we ‘ave the ‘arrers and the greenbaize cue-meisters. The prestig- ious UK Open begins at the tail end of the month and a man clearly in form is current World Champion, KYREN WILSON, who last month totally destroyed the Trumpet that is Judd in the Irish Open.

I feel not enough respect is being given to Wilson (see, I did it just now by referring to him by his surname), and whether it’s because of Ronnie getting all the headlines or Judd being a juddernaut, I’m unsure, but one thing is for certain, the boy has come of age and is hungry for more, just like Oliver. Take the universal 8/1 for Kyren to add to his trophy cabinet.

WINTER SPORTS 2 - DARTS And just before Christmas (14 December actually), the jamboree that is the PDC World Championship begins at the Ally Pally, concluding in the New Year. Last year, the darts sensation Luke Littler burst into our consciousness and this year he is ready to take his crown..or is he? Last year I headlined the eventual winner, Luke Humphries, at 8/1 and this year I’m confident of one last hurrah for GARY ANDERSON at a whopping 20/1. Quite simply no one is consistently playing to his level and fatigue not withstanding, I can see Gary giving us another whopping pay day. Remember I also tipped up Michael Smith when he took the crown at a respectable 11/1

WINTER SPORTS 3 - REALITY TV Finally, readers might remember I head- lined the chances of Keely Hodgkinson in August, prior to the Olympics to win SPOTY at a generous 11/4. She’s currently an unbackable 2/7! Hope you followed me in. Now is the time to hedge. If LANDO NORRIS wins the world drivers championship from the death in July, and it’s still a big if, then the petrolheads amongst us will surely head for the phone lines and the 10/1 on offer now will be massive.

See what happens this week in Sao Paulo. See you in Rio!!

Good punting
