TWO DARLINGTON PRIVATE HIRE DRIVERS FINED FOR ILLEGALLY PLYING FOR HIRE
Two drivers from Darlington have been fined after being caught illegally plying for hire. Both drivers were caught on CCTV cameras by Darlington BC’s control room team. Beniamin Benali, 60, was given a
conditional discharge for one year and ordered to pay £101 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to illegally plying for hire at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on 2 October. Liviu Oros, 53, was found guilty in
his absence of illegally plying for hire and driving without insurance. He was fined £1,320, ordered to pay £150 in costs and a victim surcharge of £528. He also received six penalty points on his licence.
EAST AYRSHIRE TAXI DRIVERS FACE SUSPENSION FOR MISSING DISABILITY TRAINING
A group of East Ayrshire taxi drivers could face licence suspension for failing to attend a mandatory disability awareness training course, according to a council report which recommends that the licensing panel consider
suspending up to eight drivers. Licence holders are required to attend the disability training course at least three times before facing disciplinary action. Despite repeated attempts to contact the drivers, many failed to respond or
participate in the training. The drivers facing potential sus- pension include: James Billing- ham, Marcus Sloan, Basharat Khan, Anthony Hawthorn, James Dun- nachie, Ahmed Alkassim, Hamad Al-Khalil, and Brian Kelly.
HIGH WYCOMBE CABBIE LOSES TAXI LICENCE APPEAL AT MAGISTRATES’ COURT
A High Wycombe man has been denied a taxi licence after a court upheld Buckinghamshire Council’s decision to refuse Mr Asghar a hackney carriage and private hire driver licence based on its policy. His application was rejected on 13 September, due to a history of poor
driving, including a crash with a motorbike in November 2020. The council successfully defended its decision in Wycombe Magis- trates’ Court, citing Mr Asghar’s seven penalty points on his driving licence for driving without due care and attention following the
crash and a previous revocation of his licence in 2018 for poor driving. The council’s policy states that applicants with serious motoring offences are barred from obtaining a licence for at least seven years. Mr Asghar was ordered to pay the costs of £2,451.92.
MILTON KEYNES PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER FINED FOR REFUSING ASSISTANCE DOG
A private hire driver has been fined £324 for refusing to take a fare that included a passenger and their assistance dog. Milton Keynes City Council investigated after a complaint was made. Krishnasamy Ananthan pleaded guilty to the offence at Milton Keynes Magistrates’ Court. He was
40
fined £135, ordered to pay £135 costs and a victim surcharge of £54. The court heard that Ananthan deliberately refused to pick up a blind passenger who was accompanied by their guide dog. Despite the booking clearly indicating the presence of the assistance dog, Ananthan chose to
reject the fare. Magistrates concluded that he had the opportunity to refuse the booking in advance if he had a medical reason for doing so. Ananthan’s
driving licence will
now be reviewed by Buckinghamshire Council, the authority that issued it.
