DERBY CABBIE SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS TWO MONTHS FOR TRANSFERRING £1M CRIMINAL MONEY

A Derby taxi driver has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison after pleading guilty

to criminal money.

transferring £1m of Serwan Mah-

moud, 43, was pulled over by police on the M4 near Cardiff, they found £76,000 stuffed in the boot, two iPhones and £450 in the car. Following a search at his home, officers found £7,000 in cash in a wardrobe and £1,800 in a child’s bedroom, with various other items.

Mahmoud told police he believed his actions were legitimate and this was the first time he had been

involved in crime. But, analysis of the phones re- vealed regular transfers of large amounts across the UK. He ad- mitted to being involved in the operation, claiming he was repaying a debt to a criminal gang who had helped pay for his son’s medical treatment. The court heard that Mahmoud had been approached by the gang after his son was diagnosed with a brain tumour. They

offered to cover the medical costs, and in

return, he agreed to transport large sums of money around the UK. Police found evidence of regular transfers of money between Mah- moud and the gang, with journeys made to

London, Newcastle,

Southampton, and Manchester. The money is understood to have been sent to Iran with the group sending money at an inflated exchange rate. Analysis of the data showed it was in excess of £1m. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said that while Mahmoud was remorseful, his actions were “an essential part of the operation.”

SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR GLOUCESTER CABBIE WHO SEXUALLY ASSAULTED SLEEPING PASSENGER

A Gloucester cabbie has been sentenced to 24 months in prison, suspended for two years, for sexually assaulting a female passenger who fell asleep in his cab. Taranjit Singh, 49, denied the assault and claimed he may have accidentally touched her breast as he was putting her seatbelt on for her.

He also said the victim had taken his hand and put it inside her trousers. However, he was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault following a trial at Gloucester Crown Court on July 30. The court heard that Singh had picked up the woman in her 20s and, instead of taking her home, drove her to an industrial estate

where he sexually assaulted her. The victim, who had fallen asleep, awoke to find Singh

assaulting her. She tried to push him away but he persisted with the assault, telling her she was enjoying it. The incident occurred in November 2021 after Singh, who was off-duty, agreed to pick up the victim, a breach of his taxi licence conditions. The court was shown videos recorded by the victim on previous taxi rides where Singh had made sexual advances towards her. Following the sentencing, the

victim said the incident had had a significant long-term impact on her mental health. She expressed relief that she had reported the crime to prevent others from suffering similar experiences. In addition to the suspended sentence, Singh has been banned from working as a taxi driver for 10 years, added to the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order which prohibits him from working or acting as a taxi driver or other paid driver of people in any vehicle for the next ten years. The judge also ordered Singh to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and undertake a rehabilitation programme for up to 30 days, and to pay £4,380 in prosecution fees.
