PEYTON TO SPUR ON BRONCOS TO

SUPERBOWL TRIUMPH

IT’S A NEW YEAR WITH NEW BETTING OPPORTUNITIES. Regular readers will already have laid down some ante-posts on a variety of markets that are coming to their natural conclusion. So first up let’s go to New York on the first Sunday in February to the Super Bowl.

My ante-post fancies are all still in the running with DENVER (advised at 8/1) likely to achieve homefield advan- tage throughout the playoffs if they maintain their advantage over Kansas City in December*. That being the case it is hard to overcome a focussed Peyton Manning in Colorado and the current odds of 7/2 (which are unlikely to shorten before they next play) should be taken. There is no team in the AFC who can challenge them. On the other side, in the NFC, my three previously advised picks will almost certainly be wildcards (well, two of them anyway), but nevertheless I retain confidence that especially one of them (Carolina) can win in Seattle who have homefield advantage in their section throughout the playoffs. Current odds at time of writing are SAN FRANCISCO 12/1, CAROLINA 10/1 and NEW ORLEANS 14/1. The only addition I would recommend now is to back the win- ner of the NFC South between New Orleans and Carolina as they will be the number two seeds in the NFC. Look out for my tips for the Super Bowl itself which will be online at the very least before 2nd February. Visit www.phtm.co.uk/bernie

Next up let’s look in-depth at my Cheltenham fancies with the festival rapidly approaching in mid-March. Previously my only advice has been to back THE NEW ONE (at 6/1) for the Champion Hurdle (currently 3/1 favourite) and OUR CONOR (still available at 6/1) for the same race. So on that basis let’s look at the other championship races. First up on the Tuesday is the Supreme Novices Hurdle and I would advise taking the 14/1 top price about BRIAR HILL who absolutely sluiced up a couple of weeks ago in Ireland. The battalions available to Willie Mullins make this more of a tip in itself and I can see this horse starting around the 5/1 mark. Also on Tuesday’s card is the Arkle Chase and I can see ex- champion hurdle winner ROCK ON RUBY having sufficient natural speed and application to run a big race. He again is around 14/1 with larger prices available with a number of firms.

The Gold Cup picture is still unclear and maybe in February’s column I can advise on a selection, but the main champion- JANUARY 2014 PHTM

ship race on the Thursday may go once again to reigning champion SOLWHIT at around 7/1. The monster that is Big Bucks has still to return from injury and I was less than impressed with At Fisher’s Cross recently at Newbury. In a true run race Solwhit is one horse who can tack on to the frenetic pace and pounce late. My nap of the meeting is ANALIFET in the Triumph Hurdle on the Friday. 10/1 is still available for this most impressive of juvenile hurdlers and I have no hesitation in making him my nap. For a full review of Cheltenham see my column in February’s issue.

THE RACES

To footballing matters, the latter stages of the Champions League will be starting in February. My two fancies (from this column in September and October) are still in the mix, although Arsenal meeting Bayern Munich has done us no favours. Currently REAL MADRID (advised at 6/1) and ARSENAL (advised at 25/1) are still available at this sort of price, but the one I would like to add is ATLETICO MADRID who are available at 14/1. There you have it, my three against the field.

Let’s start 2014 in profit! BERNIE THE BOOK
