In case you hadn’t picked up on it, the above is a rather different assortment of international ver- sions of Happy New Year: in Swedish, Hawaiian, Papua New Guinea-n, Romanian, Eskimo... and last but not least, Welsh.
The start of a new year always spurs on a surge of positive thoughts and ideas, and hopes for better things to happen... of course all of us at PHTM and the NPHA extend those hopeful thoughts and wishes for a belting 2014 to each and every one of our readers. So Page One kicks off with a handful of what we believe to be positives: you can’t get more positive than re- regulation in areas where the hackney carriage trade was inundated, or getting rid of a vehicle colour livery. What’s on your wish list down your way? If you want any assistance in official drum- beating, you know where to get in touch... January’s issue wouldn’t be January’s issue with- out our Review of the Year feature, now would it? Great fun as always, and this time it’s supple- mented with great cartoons and other visuals as an aide memoire... so do get stuck in. In Opinion, Chief Anorak also looks back over 2013 in his inimitable fashion, and in addition he has updat- ed the taxi fares League Table as usual, for a thumbnail reference. National average two-mile fare on Tariff One is now £5.57; that’s an increase of over 78 per cent on the national average (£3.12) when the League Table started in 1999. Pity the guys in Bolsover, where their two-miler at
£2.80 (unchanged since 2002, would you believe) is ten per cent below the 1999 aver- age, and around half the current two-mile average. Evidently the Beast of Bolsover (81- year old Labour MP Dennis Skinner) doesn’t use taxis much around his home turf...

Our usual departments haven’t been neglected in this Review issue, as newsy stuff is still hap- pening of course. Company Profile hails from Greater Manchester this time: Trafford Cars, soon to be known with its affiliated firm in Northenden as the Passenger Car Group Ltd., is busier by the week, thanks to having upgraded its auto despatch system. And there are a cou- ple of other interesting features as well, that don’t appear in ‘departments’ as such but we hope will stir some thought.
It is great to have a little corner of this humble tome to indulge in the odd dose of irreverent nonsense collected from around the country, and not necessarily associated with taxis or pri- vate hire. As you know, we often feature snippets from Richard Littlejohn of the Daily Mail, as his sardonic wit can’t help but raise a smile or three. One of his year-end contributions

reminded readers that the 40th anniversary of that famous Hovis TV advert was celebrated with a photograph of Carl Barlow, who played the delivery boy, re-enacting his role at 54 years old by sitting on a bike and being photographed at the original site on Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset. Now a fireman, Mr Barlow said: “I would- n’t even consider doing it now. It’s far too steep.” As Littlejohn points out, if they remade the com- mercial today there’d be double yellow lines, speed humps and signs saying, “Danger-No Cycling” every five yards. And the little lad would have to wear “one of those ridiculous bunch-of- bananas safety helmets, Lycra shorts and a hi-viz jacket, and there would probably also be notices warning that anyone who feeds Hovis to the ducks could face a fine of £250.” As good today as it’s always been? Have a good read...
