AND FEES...FARES AND FEES MAYOR AGREES TO
MORAY TAXI CLEAN-UP BILL DOUBLES
Taxi users who soil a Moray cab will now face a fine of £100. The area’s licensing committee voted to double the current £50 soiling charge to send out a “strong mes- sage” to passengers that it is not accept- able.
Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Douglas Ross, who moved the increase, told the Northern Scot: “The maximum charge of £50 was never going to cover the costs to the taxi operator. “By doubling it, hope- fully we are sending out a strong message that that type of behav- iour is not suitable; and trying to recover more of the costs for the taxi operators. Cllr Graham Leadbit-
ter, who seconded the motion, said discus- sions should take place with the trade to ascertain if anything can be done to ease collection of the money.
Committee member Eric McGillivray added: “If you did have a £100 fine and it was dis- played in the cab, it could go a long way to deterring people.” C&R Taxis boss Roddy McLennan welcomed the fine hike, but said getting passengers to pay up remained a problem, despite it being enforceable. “If people are drunk when they soil the vehicle, they really just don’t give a damn about it,” he said. “There are some peo- ple who apologise and
pay it up, but £50 on top of a £10 or £20 fare was always very difficult to collect.” The fine increase is due to come into force from February 8. The decision came as part of a review of taxi fares and charges fol- lowing a consultation. In light of the respons- es received, com- mittee members agreed that the current fares, set last August, will remain the same. Mmmm… Now this will really be a challenge for Moray drivers. The guys are correct: charging double the fouling fee is one thing; being able to collect it without an altercation with an ine- briated reveller is quite something else. Look after your bod! – Ed.
Taxi fares in Bristol have risen by an aver- age of eight per cent, despite opposition from cabinet council members.
Mayor George Fergu- son approved the figure, which was sub- ject to months of negotiations with taxi

Cllrs Mark Bradshaw and Gus Hoyt’s objec- tions to the rise were overruled by the mayor, who said: “Somebody has to make the decision.” The new fares were introduced on Novem- ber 16 and will mean
that on Mondays to Fridays between 6am and 10am there will be a cost of £2.60 for ini- tial hiring and £1.80 per mile thereafter. There are also higher rates during the night, at weekends, on bank holidays and during the festive period.

agreed to put up the fares as the drivers have not had an increase since May 2008.
Roger Conroy, a mem- ber of the licensing committee, said he felt it was fair the hackney carriage drivers were given the increase. The new fare tariffs,
which would result in a 40p increase on a one mile journey or extra £3.20 on a 10-mile journey, will now be advertised and people will be able to raise any objections to the plans. The council will then decide whether to introduce them from January 1, 2014.
