ATROCIOUS ATTACKS

64 MONTHS’ JAIL FOR DUNDEE THUG WHO LEFT CABBIE DISABLED IN ATTACK OVER A CIGARETTE

A criminal with a catalogue of convictions assaulted a cabbie and left him with a severe brain injury because his victim didn’t give him a cigarette, a court heard. Steven Greig, 45, attacked taxi driver Mark Ward, 54, in Dundee on April 6. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how eye- witnesses saw Greig hitting Mr Ward at the side of the road. Grieg pushed Mr Ward onto the road causing him to fall down a hill and hit his head on concrete. Greig

then started kicking his victim on the head before leaving the scene. Onlookers rushed to help Mr Ward as he lay motionless on the ground. He was rushed to hospital where medics saved him. Prosecutor Victoria Dow told judge Lady Haldane that Greig did not express remorse to police for what he did to Mr Ward when they

TWO YEARS’ JAIL FOR WREXHAM MAN WHO ATTACKED TAXI OFFICE STAFF

A man launched an unprovoked attack after being declined entry to a taxi. Nathan Kendrick, 29, from Gwersyllt, appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court for sentence on 27 January after previously admitting two counts of criminal damage and two of assaulting a police officer. He'd been convicted in his absence of assault occasioning ABH and was also to be sentenced for failing to surrender to bail. Frances Wilmott, prosecuting, told the court that in September 2021, victim Kingsley Crawford was working at the office of A1 Taxis in Brynteg. Kendrick entered the office asking for a taxi and a driver agreed to do the job. But Kendrick wanted the driver to take a “very drunk lady” as well. But due to her level of intoxication, and fearing the woman would “soil the taxi,” the service was declined. Kendrick became upset and tried to stop taxis in the road outside. He

returned inside and “went” for Mr Crawford, punch- ing him to the floor, then repeatedly kicking him. Mr Crawford had to take two weeks off work after suffering injuries to his head and eye. Police located Kendrick

and

arrested him - but he became aggressive, pulling one officer down some stairs and headbutting another officer whilst laughing, then he repeatedly headbutted the police car door, damaging it. Judge Niclas Parry said: “You carried out a sustained and violent attack on a working man and a terrified female staff member. These were people trying to help you and explain why they couldn't offer you the service you required. In total, the Judge jailed Kendrick for two years.

arrested him, saying: “I’m on five bails. That’s me f****d all because he wouldn’t give me a fag.” Greig, from Dundee, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Ward to his severe

injury, permanent dis-

figurement, permanent impair- ment and to the danger of his life. Ms Dow told the court that Grieg has 94 previous convictions for 189 offences including dishonesty, knife possession and drugs. She told the court that Mr Ward was a family man who helped his elderly parents with shopping, and taking them to appointments. Following the attack Mr Ward was rushed to hospital and was assessed as being critically ill. On April 7, surgeons performed an operation to relieve pressure on the right side of his brain but Mr Ward still hasn’t recovered. Ms Dow said: “Mark Ward still continues to be an in-patient in a Neurological ward. He is dependent on 24-hour care and it is likely that he will require long term care and assistance with all aspects of daily living.” Meanwhile, the court heard that following the assault Grieg went to a woman’s house. Ms Dow said: “He was captured on Tracey Mudie’s doorbell CCTV saying: ‘I’ve just battered a taxi driver. I asked him for a smoke and he came at me with an attitude’.” Lady Haldane sentenced Grieg on to five years and four months imprisonment for the attack, saying: “Your actions have had catastrophic consequences. The complainer has not recovered from the assault and has been left severely disabled requiring care for the rest of his life.”
