(which has been suspended due to Covid) and all the other things that need to be done such as the CSE course and so on. I also informed him that the three main companies here run their own excellent knowledge schools.
What this means is that it can take a few months of studying to be a proficient bona fide Brighton & Hove licensed driver, who has the skills to know where he or she is going. There is no use in relying on a satnav when a road is closed!
He told me that he had been to the local Uber Hub, based in Hove, which is where I presume the Brighton & Hove Uber operator’s licence is registered. He said he had spoken with a couple of trendy guys who told him that it was far easier to go and get a Lewes District Council licence (next door) or one from Chichester, about thirty miles away. This would of course allow him to predominantly work here in Brighton & Hove.
So here we have the Uber Brighton & Hove operator telling potential drivers who want to join the trade to not bother with getting a Brighton & Hove licence. Is this right?
I am pleased to say that having worked in the so called gig economy doing deliveries and not being impressed working under global faceless entities, he told me that he wouldn’t work under Uber. So, hopefully he will call into one of the local taxi companies and be joining the local trade. One point I said to him is that when working with one of the local com- panies he can be assured of having contact with a human rather than a bot when trying to communicate on any issues.
HERE WE GO AGAIN
If you have ever previously read my ramblings, then you will know that the trade here works closely together, and reports of out-of-town cars/drivers that are breaking their own conditions of licensing, are sent to me and I then pass them on to the respective licensing authority. This also includes out-of-town cars using our ranks.
In PHTM last year, I reported on a couple of our London cab driver friends using our busy ranks to plonk their cabs there for many hours of free parking. Well, they think it’s free parking until we get onto the ‘Bat Phone’ to Parking Enforce- ment and they get a nice penalty notice.
So, I present the first London cab driver of 2022 who is awarded our ‘virtual’ prize stick of seaside rock which has ‘PLONKER’ embedded in it. Well done to the London cab driver of the TfL hackney carriage licence 74281 for getting this prize for block- ing one of our busiest ranks in the city for several hours on Saturday night, 12 March.
APRIL 2022
However, we are pleased to know that you were also awarded another prize of a lovely penalty notice. If anyone thinks that this is being unfair, well it’s not. Even a local hackney carriage that is left on a rank will also get one.
So just a friendly warning to our colleagues from London, and everywhere else as well: you are all welcome to visit our city, but please, use the car parks and not our ranks.
CONDOLENCES
Very sadly Mick Hildreth, who was the Operations Manager of City Cabs for twenty years, passed away last month after a short illness.
Mick was very popular here, where I knew and worked with him going back over thirty-five years in the trade.
Mick was also a keen activist for the local GMB taxi section.
Mick will be greatly missed and we offer our sincere condolences to his family for their loss.
