OLDHAM PHV DRIVER SHARES SHOCK AFTER DRIVING BAN IN MISTAKEN IDENTITY CASE
A private hire driver has spoken of his shock after being told that he was banned from driving due to speeding in a case of mistaken identity. According to The Oldham Times, Pete Bromley, runs his own firm Pete’s Cars, which transports animals for vets. But last month he received a letter from the DVLA, informing him that he had been convicted of a driving offence and was disqualified.
Baffled and in shock, Pete, 60, who has never committed a driving offence, dis- covered the alleged speeding offence happened in August last year in Solihull. But he had proof he was working across Oldham that day, nowhere near where the incident reportedly took place. After speaking to Birmingham Magis- trates’ Court, where the case was
processed, he discovered that the per- son who allegedly committed the offence shared the same name and date of birth as Pete. But the address was completely different and the court and DVLA realised an error had been made. An apology email was sent by the court which said: “Please be advised that due to your driver record number being input onto another driver’s court case, it appears that an endorsement was put on your driver record in error. “I apologise for any inconvenience or distress caused by this error.” Pete, who has run his business for 14 years, said: “It was frightening when I got the letter from the DVLA. My councillor Chris Gloster, whom I know well, was really helpful in sorting it out for me.” Pete said he felt a great sense of relief
but was also left angry with the way the case was handled.
He added: “Something needs to be done about the system. They cannot go for someone on just their name and date of birth, obviously that is not enough information.” Speaking about his role in helping Pete, Cllr Gloster said: “This could have had a devastating effect upon Pete's busi- ness and livelihood had the mistake not been uncovered. “Scarily, had he not contacted me, there appears to be no simple solution to resolving unless you know how the system works and can actually get someone to listen. “I am happy that Pete’s unblemished record has been reinstated and he is now able to work again.”
