6 YEARS 9 MONTHS’ JAIL FOR KNIFE WIELDING SHEFFIELD ROBBER WHO TOOK CABBIE’S CAR

A knife-wielding robber has been jailed after he took a taxi driver’s car before crashing into other vehicles. The Star reports that Doncaster Crown Court heard on 17 March, that Dale James Hutchinson, 32, from Sheffield, approached the cabbie near his address and pulled out a knife and fol- lowing a struggle he took the taxi and was involved in several collisions. Recorder Meghan Rhys told Hutchin- son: “He was terrified he was going to be killed. You came up to him and pro- duced a large knife which you used to threaten him.” David Bradshaw, prosecuting, said

Hutchinson had pulled out the kitchen knife and demanded to know where the money was but the com- plainant resisted and was slashed across his wrist as he was dragged out and the defendant fled in the vehicle. Hutchinson collided with a station- ary car and as the complainant hung on to the taxi the defendant collided with a garden fence but as the cabbie fell Hutchinson struck two more vehicles as he drove away.

Police spotted the taxi and after Hutchinson ran off, the vehicle burst into flames. When the defendant was detained he was found with the taxi driver’s credit card, Sat-Nav and keys. Hutchinson pleaded guilty to robbery, possessing a bladed article, dangerous driving and driving without insurance after the incident on October 7, 2021. Recorder Rhys said: “Taxi drivers pro- vide a valuable service to the public but the very nature of their job means that they are vulnerable.” She sentenced Hutchinson to six years and nine months’ jail and disqualified him from driving for 59 months .
