The world facing the information profession through to 2030 and beyond is full of daunting challenges and thrilling opportunities.

Louis Coiffait-Gunn Chief Executive Louis.Coiffait-Gunn@cilip.org.uk

S we come to the end of 2025 and our current five-year strategy ‘We are CILIP’, I’m delighted to start sharing with you more about CILIP’s new 2026-30 strategy ‘Empowering

Impact’. ‘Empower’ because you play a vital role in society giving people the information and skills to make informed choices for themselves, and only CILIP empowers the entire sector to do that. And ‘impact’ because we all have to continuously improve, and to be more outward facing and persuasive, boldly walking the walk and talking the talk, together. I’m enormously grateful to all of you who took part in the strategy consultation – attending one of the 22 in-person and online sessions, the two Town Halls, and completing the online survey and slidos, I read all 1,590 responses!

Thanks also to all the partner organisations that acted as critical friends on an early draft. Across it all, you had some clear messages about what we must focus on over the next five years if we’re to serve you better and future-proof our profession. You know that you’re having a positive impact on people’s lives, that you’re trusted to inspire, inform and empower. But you can’t always demonstrate it. And you know CILIP is uniquely able to connect, empower and champion the whole information profession – including every single person and organisation in it – but we can’t always demonstrate that currently. The world facing the information profession through to 2030 and beyond is full of daunting challenges and thrilling opportunities. We’re largely a publicly-funded profession so years of low growth, productivity and employer investment in skills means ongoing funding challenges for many of you. And yet, society has never needed our values and expertise more – on some of the thorniest and most important issues. From inclusive learning and good growth, to intellectual freedom and ethical AI – we should be confident that we have something uniquely valuable to offer, and make that case together more strongly than ever. You need a professional association that builds on

strengths developed since 1877 but which evolves more quickly. That unites and mobilises different member communities and partners in new ways, to grow our profession’s influence. That helps you stay at the cutting- edge of theory and practice at each stage of your career, wherever you work. That gives you opportunities to raise your profile and connect beyond your organisation, sector, profession and country. On the latter, you’ll have seen the exciting news about the World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) coming to the UK in 2027, our 150th anniversary year, watch this space for ways to get involved. However, sustaining and evolving CILIP’s positive impact on the profession will only be possible if we reinforce our foundations, which is why we’re investing in a major digital transformation to deliver a more modern, efficient and sustainable offer to you. You’ll start to see and feel the difference from our new website, online member platform, digital magazines and content, and other new systems over the next few months. We know a major update is long overdue. So, I hope you’ll join us in this exciting next chapter; as a member, as a volunteer, and as an advocate. Society needs you to be at the top of your game, and you need CILIP to be in your corner. It’s not going to be easy, learning and changing never is, but that’s also what makes it so rewarding, and even fun at times. So look out for updated services, for renewals letters, and for opportunities to work with us in new ways. The new strategy will go fully live to the public in January and we’re already getting excited about Members’ Fest in March, I hope you’ll get involved. Thank you for your support, we’re really looking forward to facing the future with you.
