IN DEPTH ‘‘

Rob Mackinlay is a journalist for Information Professional.

At CILIP we see that the need for a strong profession has intensified but also that our members face obstacles to interacting with their profession.

CILIP and the year ahead – what’s in store for members?

A lot is going on across all library and information sectors and being part of a profession helps you work out what’s important, what to do about it and what’s coming next. Here Rob Mackinlay looks at CILIP’s activity over the last 12 months and ahead to 2026.

EXTRAORDINARY technology, economics and politics make it an interesting and chal- lenging time to be a library and information professional, but also an important time to have a strong professional identity and network.

As a professional body we naturally focus on profes- sional development. Yes, we have some eye-catching new projects we could mention (and we will later) but CILIP’s main role is to maintain and update the devel- opment opportunities for our individual members. At CILIP we see that the need for a strong profes- sion has intensified but also that our members face obstacles to interacting with their profession. Differing individual circumstances require a wide range of products, from one-off training courses to Professional Registration. Also networking and events like Members’ Fest in March 2026 or the recent Green Libraries Conference.

But underpinning all of these is the professional com- munity that is unlocked through CILIP membership, the Special Interest groups (SIGs) and the Regional Networks, which provide deeper layers of expertise and networking.

Whichever level you are at and whatever constraints to your time or resources, CILIP provides opportuni- ties for you to invest in your own skills and this could be the best commitment you make to your career.

PKSB

All of CILIP’s training and development is under- pinned by the world-renowned Professional Knowl- edge and Skills Base (PKSB) and toolkit, which was developed to give information professionals a clear insight into their own skills needs.

20 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL Winter 2025

The PKSB allows you to gauge your own professional skills and tailor training to specific needs and next year an update of the PKSB is planned, ensuring it reflects the skills of today and the coming years. From webinars and conferences to specially-created training sessions delivered with expert partners, there is something for everyone looking to bridge a gap in their knowledge.

Bread and butter A core benefit for members is CILIP’s Professional Registration scheme. Achieving Professional Reg- istration shows a clear commitment to professional development and is widely recognised by employers both in the UK and internationally.

PKSB wheel.
