If you are a steel warship enthusiast who builds large scale models, whether radio controlled or static, then the short version of this review is that this excellent book belongs in your personal library.
Author Kerry Jang is well known on various forums and elsewhere in print as both an excellent model ship builder and a superior communicator. Despite being a professor of psychiatry at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, his writing style is clear, humorous when appropriate, and quite informative. Even a non-academic can easily follow the author’s descriptions of various building stages.
T e author invites you on a textual and photographic journey, from an overview of why he builds large scale models to what is available in the form of kits and aſt ermarket accessories. He adds his opinions on both good points and not so good points regarding the kits and items he uses in his builds. He also covers tools, paints, fi gures, and decals in the various chapters, so there is an abundant amount of information for static modelers who build large scale warships with no intention of adding electronics for pond running. For those who do intend to operate their models, the author covers the installation of motors, shaſt s, propellers, and electronics in an easy to understand manner.
T ere are chapters dealing with mold-making for casting parts in resin and types of adhesives and putties with an explanation of what each is and what they are best used for. One impressive section is: “What are we trying to achieve with paint?” wherein the author uses many plastic model airplane painting techniques in his airbrushing that are well illustrated. He also includes references and lists his resources, online and via mail, for the products he uses in his builds.
