thinner. Let them sit for three of four minutes and then rub off all the excess varnish; if you rub with a stiff piece of polyester material this also polishes them a little.
If you want to lash the thimble directly to a shroud or other support, then putting in an extra groove is helpful. (Figure 6 C-G-C) Make another guide cut (G) with the scalpel blade between the two end cuts
and enlarge it using a round needle fi le. A deep groove is unnecessary as it only has to accommodate four or fi ve turns of the line used for the lashing; plenty of strength to hold the thimble in place forever. Any additional turns just make the assembly start to look too bulky.
