Vol. 64, No. 4 winter 2019 350

56. Image is a composite of USS Quincy photograph and photograph of author’s model. Summary

My intent was to build a pre-World War II rendition of San Francisco with as much accuracy and detail as I could muster. To achieve this goal, I used 224 parts from the kit, plus 1,020 scratch built and aftermarket pieces. Therefore, the total parts count came to 1,244. So, less than twenty percent of the pieces used came from out of the box. It took me two years and two months to build, with 1,108 hours expended. I hope you like the model and enjoy the article.

Postscript

I learned after the project was completed that some of the ship’s original hull portholes were plated over, and that the 1942 Trumpeter kit refl ects this change, so my model may not have enough portholes. Anyone who is considering building a pre-1942 San Francisco should check into this and plan their build accordingly.
