focused on some extra detailing. Using metal rod, styrene, and copper wire I scratch-built the boat booms and kingposts that are visible in many archival photographs of the ship. (Figure 37) In addition, I created realistic rope reels by wrapping copper wire around a styrene axle, painting it, cutting it into segments and gluing them between photo-etched reel supports. Figure 38 shows the wrapping process, a completed assembly, and, in the background, a plastic kit part, for comparison.

The fi nal important subassembly I had to address was the unusual quadrupedal (four-footed) ensign staff mounted on the fantail. I discarded the kit’s oversized plastic fl agpole and went to work building a quadruped. The fi rst thing I did was to make a more realistic and scale-correct fl ag than the kit’s decal would provide. I purchased a linen Model Shipways fl ag, soaked it in water, and curled it with metal
