CRUISE: CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE

where I want us to think differently and that’s where we are starting to go towards.”

Carnival Adventures shop Underpinning the enhanced retail presence is a conveyor belt of refurbishments and renovations across its fleet of vessels. At the end of last year, the cruise

line and its partners’ Heinemann Americas and Effy Jewelry unveiled an uprated shopping experience onboard Carnival Liberty, with a renovation of the 299sq m space delivering a host of new brands including Shinola watches, Tiffany & Co. fragrances, Dr. Jart beauty products and Coeur de Leon jewellery. In spirits, new additions included

Bruno Mars’ Selva Rey Rum, Timber Creek whiskey, Malfy Gin and Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, all of which are Heinemann exclusives. Returning favourites include

watches from Tag Heuer, Tissot, Movado and Invicta, plus Swarovski jewellery and Victoria’s Secret fragrances. So far in 2019, retail shops onboard

three ships (Carnival Fantasy, Pride and Freedom) have been refurbished. Carnival Fantasy, another Gebr.

Heinemann-operated ship, recently emerged from dry dock with an expanded assortment. Similar to Liberty, upgrades have been made in beauty and fashion accessories, with enlarged selections for Citizen watches and Tissot, alongside Clinique, Estée Lauder, Lancôme and Tiffany & Co. fragrances. Complementing these are new

branded spaces for Hennessy and Johnnie Walker as part of an overhauled spirits section.

Dufry on Panorama A number of other refurbishments are set for this year, including a $200m transformation of Carnival Triumph into Carnival Sunrise. This is itself part of a $2bn fleet-wide ship enhancement programme that includes a significant investment in onboard retail spaces. Carnival Sunrise is due to make its maiden voyage on 29 April. Butler tells TRBusiness when it emerges from dry dock, the ship will

be fully refurbished across a number of areas. As he explains: “We will be

officially launching our very first Carnival Adventures store on that ship. “We’ve got merchandise on our

ships, but not in a separate store.” Information on the size of the shop

was not available when TRBusiness enquired, but it will sell around 300 different skus in an existing, transformed retail space. “What is exciting for me is we’re

giving more real estate to retail but in a very meaningful way,” according to Butler. “As we refurbish our shops and build new ships, we continue to evolve the retail shopping environment so it is fully integrated into the overall guest experience.” Looking ahead, Butler reveals that

Dufry has been selected to run the tax free and duty free concession onboard latest vessel Carnival Panorama, which sets sail from Long Beach, California on 11 December. Dufry, which already holds

contracts for Carnival Sensation, Valor and Inspiration, will operate alongside Effy Jewelry (fine jewellery) with guests able to peruse a number of categories on the 15- deck, 4,008-passenger Vista-class vessel, which joins Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon. Dufry is understood to have secured the multi-year contract in a

tightly fought tender. Specific details on the number of

Dufry-operated shops, their sizes and retail configurations was not immediately available, but Butler confirms the ship will include a few ‘firsts’ at sea. “The shops are larger than

Carnival Horizon and we’ve got some extended footprints that spill out into the atrium that will allow us to further interact with the guests as they are enjoying the entertainment onboard. We also have new brands and experiences to bring the space to life.” Stay close to TRBusiness for further details as they emerge. «
