EXHIBITIONS ACHEMA 2022: The world forum for the

process industry back on site in Frankfurt After ACHEMA Pulse 2021 - the pioneering digital event for the process industry - ACHEMA 2022 is back in Frankfurt: from April 4 to 8, 2022, the Frankfurt exhibition grounds will once again be the meeting place for the global process industry. In times of pandemic, a comprehensive hygiene concept ensures that personal exchange and networking are safely possible on site.

Trendsetting technology and worldwide networking will once more characterize the world’s leading trade show in 2022. Manufacturers and service providers from almost 50 nations will present products for chemistry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, energy and the environment. Founders and young entrepreneurs will meet in the Start-up Area.

“After a two-year dry spell, the need for intensive technical and personal exchange is palpable,” says Dr. Thomas Scheuring, CEO of DECHEMA Ausstellungs-GmbH. This is also reflected in the increasing exhibitor demand: currently, more than 2,400 exhibitors have registered to present their range of products, solutions and services for the process industry on more than 100,000 square meters. The spectrum ranges from laboratory equipment, pumps and analytical instruments to packaging machines, boilers and stirrers, safety technology, materials and software - everything needed in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing industries. “Despite the hygiene concept and thus more airy stand design as well as larger dimensioned walkways, we still have one or the other stand space available,” adds Scheuring.

With the focus topics “Modular and Networked Production,” “Digital Lab” and “Product and Process Security,” ACHEMA 2022 will also address current trends that are driving the industry:

Product and process safety

The increasing use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in plant operation and production puts IT and cyber security at the top of the agenda. Cyber attacks are becoming more frequent. The interplay between the physical and virtual worlds must therefore be secured. Weak spots along the entire value chain have to be evaluated and eliminated, from the procurement of raw materials to the recycling of products at the end of their useful life.

The digital lab It’s in many cases still a long way to go before intelligent digital workflows will be implemented in a fully networked laboratory. The minimum basis is the construction of a powerful IT environment and fully integrated devices; but it can also go up to a complete redesign and repartitioning of laboratories.R&D laboratories and quality assurance laboratories may pursue different approaches. Therefore, a modular design is just as reasonable for the laboratory as it is for production facilities. Both laboratory types generate a large amount of data, which must be evaluated using big data methods.

Modular and networked production

Manufacturing processes in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries must be flexible, fast and cost-effective. Modular process skids that offer these features are pre-assembled, tested in the pilot plant and then assembled on site. The skids are equipped with their own programmable control logic or can be integrated into a higher-level process control system. Module Type Packages (MTP) with open standard interfaces allow for true interoperability. Modular systems are the key to meeting customer requirements for small batches of different products.

The megatopic of digitalization is moving more into focus at ACHEMA thanks to the “Digital Hub” as a meeting place for the digital economy. And sustainability issues will also run like a thread

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

through ACHEMA: Topics such as hydrogen, chemical recycling or biological production processes are high on the industry’s agenda, as also shown by ACHEMA Pulse.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive program ranging from targeted exchanges between start-ups and investors to the presentation of the winners of the ACHEMA Founders Award and opportunities for informal networking. In addition, there is the lecture program:

The ACHEMA Congress covers the full spectrum of chemical process technology and biotechnology. Under the three overarching headings of “Fossil free production”, “New developments in production” and “Laboratory and analytics”, the entire range of topics from analytics, energy supply, process design and reaction engineering to safety technology is represented. The presentations should focus on application-oriented research and development from proof-of-concept to the threshold of market entry.

At the ACHEMA-PRAXISforums, market- and practice-oriented topics are presented in a compact form and in close proximity to the respective exhibition groups. Industrial applications and new products and services from the fields of chemical engineering, biotechnology and the process industry are the focus here. For topics that cannot be assigned to a specific exhibition group, an “Open Topic” strand is provided.

With highlight sessions and discussion panels, new formats were also created at ACHEMA Pulse that will also find their place at ACHEMA in April 2022. The digital event in June 2021 met with a great response from the industry. With the opportunity for digital exchange over an entire month and the top-class live program, which included streaming from three stages in Frankfurt, discussions were initiated that can now be continued and intensified on site.

“ACHEMA Pulse showed us that a virtual event can be a good complement to ACHEMA as a physical exhibition,” says Björn Mathes, Member of the Executive Board at DECHEMA Exhibitions. But for now, organizers, exhibitors and visitors are looking forward to the opportunity to finally meet in person again.
