WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Q. Activated Insight’s work in analyzing worker feedback has been valuable to providers. Do you find that families and loved ones take workplace ratings into account as well? A. Absolutely, families and loved ones look at workplace ratings. The providers who have earned a spot on Fortuneʼs Best Work- places lists tell us all the time that they have families come to them saying they noticed their employee workplace rating. These families say they prioritized tour-
ing or talking to them over another provider because they want to know that those caring for their mom or dad are being cared for in turn by their employers. Like the U.S. News process, the Fortune Best
Workplaces process is 100 percent based on data. You cannot pay more to do better (and some have asked).
Q. Your commitment to DEI action is known in the industry. Are there plans to include specific DEI factors or other additions to the ratings? A. If you look at U.S. News’s methodology in other franchises such as Best Hospitals, you will notice that every year they evolve it to be better. That is something we liked about the U.S. News approach. And we are adopting that “continuous
improvement” approach to the methodol- ogy for Best Senior Living. The feedback from CEOs of Argentum, ASHA, Leadin- gAge, NIC, Sunrise, Five Star, Benchmark, and over 20 other operators was that we need to keep it simple to start. We are convening in the spring as a sim-
ilar group of advisors to review the data and methodology for the first year and potential changes for the next year, driven from research on what improves quality and outcomes for our seniors.
Q. What can executive directors focus on to help continually improve quality? A. After a few years of looking at the data and working with providers, I think one of the biggest factors that furthers employee engagement is promoting from within. How can you grow a part-time server
who is looking for a career path? How can you grow a caregiver who wants to further her technical and leadership skills? I mean, remember ourselves at ages 18 and 20—if someone had taken us under their wing, wouldn't that have transformed the way we grew our careers? If an executive director can identify and
cultivate their staff in fair as well as inspiring ways to grow into roles across the communi- ty, they will have a more engaged team who has high retention. High retention in turn drives better care for our older adults.
