Desert Garden

Club Solé at the Colonnade

Club Solé at the Colonnade features a special desert demon- stration garden. Designed to give residents a different destina- tion as well as a way to experience local plantings, the garden is situated outdoors on one side of the new clubhouse. The garden includes a variety of flowering and fragrant plants indigenous to the desert, such as cactus, aloe, and agave, along with local trees. An arroyo, or creek, flows through the garden and feeds a waterfall. Walking paths loop through the garden which spreads over three-quarters of an acre. Seating is interspersed along the path to provide spots for conversation and reflection. The path has a slight incline to give residents more exercise. “It’s really different from the rest of

the community,” said Russell Greey, landscape architect and president of Greey | Pickett. He explained that much of the landscaping throughout the community consists of ornamental plants and lush greenery, in contrast to the desert garden which more closely resembles the native landscape. The garden is lighted at night and residents can enjoy a stroll on

summer evenings when the heat keeps them inside during the day. Also, some of the community’s apartments overlook the garden. Several other outdoor spaces are featured at Club Solé. A put- ting green is situated on one side of the building, outside of an ac- tivity room. A swimming pool sits on another side of the building. Doors in the exercise room open outside to a yoga lawn where classes are held when the weather is nice. The yoga lawn is surrounded by hedges that act as a screen to provide privacy. “We are trying to give residents varied experiences,” said Greey.
