More Time with Residents


When evaluating point-of-care software, it’s important that the system can be accessed from any device with Internet access, including laptops, touch-screen kiosks, tablets, iPads, and even iPhones. This allows caregivers to spend more time with residents, and the proximity of their device allows immediate documentation which can increase accuracy, while also allowing the caregiver to remain engaged with the residents, so they can become a more regular, interactive part of the community.


For example, time studies with communities using MatrixCare’s CareAssist software show a 32% savings in data entry time (compared to using paper documentation), and 40-60 minutes of additional time spent with residents in common areas during each caregiver shift. Since documentation is integrated into the caregiver’s daily activities, end-of-shift charting, as well as associated overtime, is eliminated.


Improved Care Coordination


Another benefit of point-of-care software is the ability to standardize documentation for caregivers across all disciplines. Staff with appropriate password permissions can view resident documentation from previous shifts, including activities, incidents, behaviors and other information that helps provide true resident- centered care. A single tool can provide the capability to capture services provided while allowing the interdisciplinary team to collaborate on things like behaviors, preferences, medication management, and changes in level of care.


Increased Medication Safety


An important consideration when choosing a point-of-care solution is pharmacy-centric order entry, which provides interoperability between the pharmacy and the community. This increases the accuracy of data entry, ultimately improving medication safety and management. Facility staff is relieved of data entry and orders are imported from the pharmacy, greatly increasing accuracy of transcription and safety for residents.


Fairview Manor in Fairmont, Nebraska, realized immediate time savings when they converted to MatrixCare’s CareAssist for pharmacy-centric order entry from another e-prescribing product. “Our facility saves 4-6 hours of data entry time on Admissions,” said Justin Sole, RN at Fairview.


“Data entry is done at the pharmacy by technicians who are trained specifically for data entry and specialize in that process. Then orders are reviewed by a pharmacist for accuracy, drug-drug interaction, potential duplicate therapy, and reactions that could come from patient’s allergies. The facility simply verifies the imported order after the fact,” added Jim Ryan, IT Director at Fairview’s pharmacy partner, Community Pharmacy. This results in greater than 99% accuracy of order entry, which virtually eliminates medication errors caused by inaccurate data entry. Overall, Fairview’s use of CareAssist has resulted in a 70% reduction in medication errors.
