A Unique Industry Demands a Unique Workforce Plan


There is no doubt that employees are the senior living industry’s most valuable resource; how the industry recruits, trains, and retains those employees is what powers the success of the industry. But we know the challenges ahead— the need to recruit 1.2 million workers by 2025 to meet the demands of an aging population. Together, we can fi nd and engage a workforce of the future. We are pleased to introduce Senior Living Works (p.32), a new initiative led by Argentum with a goal of providing


tools to help industry professionals build tomorrow’s senior living workforce. We’ve developed a website and a comprehensive toolkit with easy to use resources, empowering you to recruit with confi dence and reach diverse and talented individuals. Discover how we can help you by visiting seniorliving.works and be sure to share with us your success stories. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the senior living industry employed 892,000 people in 2016. Each of these employees brings their own experiences, their own passions, their own needs and wants, and their own challenges to work with them each day. Sharing and implementing industry-wide best practices for supporting new employees, engaging current employees, and attracting new, dedicated people to the industry is more important than ever. In this issue of Senior Living Executive, the Workforce Issue, we take a look at strategies for getting new hires up to speed on what it means to work in senior living (p.6). This job is not like any other job—and understanding the ins and outs of this complex industry is critical to success. We share some advice from industry experts on what an eff ective onboarding plan includes and how to set a forward-looking career path for new employees. We also address opportunities for ensuring your sales team is receiving the right training (p.14). Today’s sales team cannot be the sales team of yesteryear. Changes in the way prospective residents learn about senior living options and in the way inquiries are handled are all part of the bigger picture. Additionally, we know that executive directors are in demand; their time is often divided among building relationships with residents, supporting staff , participating in community outreach, communicating with family members, and responding to corporate needs, among others. We talked to four executive directors about what methods they use to best manage their time and priorities, and several common themes emerged p.44). In this issue, you’ll also read about the benefi ts of cross-generational mentoring
