Meeting the Expectations of Today’s Workforce
E
mployees are in the driver’s seat in today’s senior care organizations. Given staffi ng shortages and historically low unemployment, employees have more employment options and job choices in this highly competitive market. And, the rise of millennials in the workforce has upped the
stakes for employers as millennials have higher expectations and workplace demands.
Now is the time for senior living providers to create a culture that focuses on their greatest asset — their employees. The key to an employee-fi rst culture is not just making employees happy but also keeping them engaged.
The documented benefits of an engaged workplace are astounding. Mounds of research point to higher profits, greater customer satisfaction, higher quality and lower turnover, just to name a few.
This begs the question… How good is your organization at meeting expectations and engaging today’s workforce?
What’s Measured Is Managed To determine the success of an employee engagement initiative, it’s critical to benchmark, trend and report on performance. Why? Because what’s measured is managed.
For most organizations, this starts with examining the impact each of your engagement initiatives has on turnover and retention. Has there been a drop in tenure after a new policy was implemented? Did turnover reduce after the introduction of a rewards and recognition program?
However, to be most effective, senior living providers should be more proactive in identifying and analyzing the leading indicators of success in their programs. For example, tracking employee performance, regularly monitoring satisfaction and gathering real-time feedback can serve as a gauge into your workforce, offering early insights that impact turnover.
OnShift is committed to helping senior living providers create a consistent and engaged workforce. Based on our experiences working with thousands of post-acute care and senior living providers, we have developed a list of best practices and measurements that are proving to engage and retain employees.
