EDITOR'S LETTER

PRESIDENT & CEO James Balda jbalda@argentum.org

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER Gina Mamone

This learning issue provides opportunities to improve your business and outlook

It has been said that change is the only constant in life. One could say that learning should be a constant, too. And with the top industry challenge of workforce, learning, and the investment in learning, has proven to provide positive returns in the areas of staffing, retention, customer acquisition, customer service, resident experience, and thus the bottom line. We begin our learning issue by reviewing the need for training (p. 10) and why it is important to the senior living

industry, and your company. This is followed by a review of different certification programs from across a variety of industries (p. 14) and how they can be used to help bolster employee retention and increase customer satisfaction. Taking a closer look at the importance of a third-party seal shows that companies who utilize certification are demonstrating their commitment to supporting the professional growth of their employees and to providing a higher- level quality of service to those in their care. Investing in employee development can also provide exponential returns as detailed in the article that follows (p. 18). Find highlights from this year’s Senior Living Executive Conference and Expo

(p. 22), including highlights from the 2022 Hero Awards presentation at the conference (p. 30) and leading into coverage of the 2022 Best of the Best Awards winners (p. 32).

Also featured in this issue is a question and answer discussion with Kemy Jospeh, MS, EdS, about the ongoing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) conversation (p. 42). Joseph, an executive coach and DEI strategist, shares his thoughts on the stages of DEI maturity; he will be delivering a keynote speech at the Senior Living Leadership Summit in November (registration is open at argentum.org). Finally, we take a look back at how the senior living industry connected with communities to provide support and hope to Ukraine. Find details in the Heart of Senior Living on (p. 48) and be sure to watch for the next edition of Senior Living Executive. The career issue will be released in September.
