Ardennes region and now the larger Grand-Est, Haute-Marne is a quiet and rural area with around 1,800km of waterways (great for fishing), expansive forests and a scattering of champagne vineyards. The main towns are


Chaumont (home to the International Poster and Graphics Festival), Langres (a picturesque walled town), St-Dizier and the spa town of Bourbonne-les-Bains, and there are pretty villages such as Joinville and Vignory as well as Renaissance castles. The nearest airports are


in Strasbourg and Basel- Mulhouse-Freiburg, but the area is within relatively easy reach of Calais ferry port and the Channel Tunnel.

Also in the Grand-Est region, Meuse was previously in Lorraine. Now a tranquil corner of France, it was the location of one of the main battles of World War I, Verdun, hence the area is known for its military tourism, with many cemeteries and memorials. The area also has medieval
