Châteaux capital – Mayenne has more per square metre than any other region
The town of Mayenne, with the Notre-Dame basilica overlooking it
Tuff eau stone houses Certain older properties are built from ‘tuff eau’, an attractive pale stone from the local Loire quarries. It can be blonde, pale beige or almost white – a fi ne-grained limestone that is characteristic of this area. A fi ve-bedroom stately home in Château-Gontier, with all its cornices and window surrounds made from tuff eau, is currently on the market for €490,000.
Châteaux Mayenne is said to have more châteaux per square metre than any other region: nearly 600 in total, of which 400 are privately owned. Dick Strawbridge’s home, which featured in TV’s ‘Escape to the Château’ is near Laval, and nearby, you can buy a beautifully renovated Renaissance château with fi ve bedrooms for €1.2m complete with landscaped grounds and pool.
Equestrian properties With so much space, this is a great area for horse-riding, so it’s no surprise that there is a variety of equestrian properties here. A simple four-bedroom home with six hectares set up to accommodate horses starts at about €300,000, while an established business with a large home, eight hectares and all the equipment costs from €600,000.
Longère These ‘long buildings’ were originally built to house workers
or perhaps were outbuildings for a larger nearby property, so they’re usually found in rural areas. They generally feature a series of rooms on the ground fl oor – oſt en interconnecting – and sometimes have a converted attic space. Longères in Mayenne start at around €60,000 for a renovation project with 2,000m2 of land, or €105,000 for one that's ready to move into.
Farmhouse Given the agricultural nature of Mayenne, unsurprisingly it has a high proportion of farmhouses, from modest stone structures to sprawling properties with countless outbuildings. A €200,000 budget will buy you a habitable farmhouse with outbuildings and 8,000m2
here.
Pavillon This French term generally refers to a modern, single-storey home on a small housing estate, perhaps with bedrooms in the eaves. For a €120,000 budget, you can take your pick of three- bedroom pavillons in Jublains, Levaré, Laval and Evron, all with a small garden.
Village house A ‘maison de village’ can be a terraced stone cottage or a detached home with a garden. A village house to renovate starts around €40,000, but if you have €65,000 you can choose one that’s well maintained and ready to move into.
