LOCATION
The capital city of Haute-Loire, Le Puy-en-Velay is on the Chemin de Stevenson, Way of St-James and Via Podiensis
Le Puy-en-Velay is famous for its lacemaking
LE PUY-EN-VELAY Alexia Belledent of Côté Particuliers tells me you’ll find tall medieval stone terraced houses in the centre of Le Puy- en-Velay, around the cathedral cloister. This lies below the Corneille rock, a 130m volcanic neck topped by the monumental statue of Notre Dame de France. Some properties may have
courtyards or small gardens; many are classed as historic monuments. Alexia is currently marketing a later 17th-century classified property – four floors, small rear courtyard, circa €400,000. Houses have also been converted into apartments. Expect to pay €130,000-€150,000 for a one- bedroom apartment in an old building with cachet. Prices to the south around
the Jardin Vinay are similar, she says, because it takes the same time to walk down from the cathedral to the centre as it does to walk along the flat from the Vinay Garden. Nearby, modern houses on the Montée des Capucins are sought after for their views. Property in Aiguilhe, on the northern side of town behind the hospital, is popular with doctors and other professionals. Alexia says prices are circa €200,000 for a

1980s property requiring lots of work, around €350,000 for more recent houses built in the 2000s and requiring very little. The villages of Chaspinhac
and Chaspusac are popular; properties often come with anything up to 5,000m2
of land.
It’s worth looking at St-Paulien and La Lavoûte-sur-Loire too, which also have a real village centre with shops yet are only 20 minutes from Le Puy. For nature lovers, you’re

close to everything. There’s hiking in the hills and an agreeable climate with the four seasons. Many properties have pools thanks to sunny summers (there are rivers and the Lac du Bouchet for those who don’t). In winter it can snow, spring and autumn are pleasant. A free shuttle bus service takes you into the centre if you arrive by train. It’s a go-ahead town but folk aren’t in a rush, they’re relaxed. “C’est
une ville où il fait bon vivre”, says Alexia.
LOZÈRE VILLAGES In Lozère, Aureline Cuny-Polge at Ardèche Lozère Immobilier says La Bastide-Puylaurent is a touristy village geared up to accommodating walkers on the Stevenson trail. The train stops here enabling hikers to walk it in stages. Modern properties with gardens are around €150,000. A narrow terraced house in the old village will cost €60,000-€70,000; some have back gardens, others maybe just a balcony or terrace. There’s a spa at St-Laurent-
les-Bains just over the border in Ardèche and during the season
