You can consult a notaire before you even find a

French property owners who wish to rent out their homes will now

need to register with the mairie (town hall)

I’ve just arrived home from our French Property Exhibition, held in London at the end of January. As always, it was an absolute delight meeting readers and hearing all about their plans. Not just those looking for a property either; one couple had already bought their place in Confolens, a town which I love. The house needs lots of work but is full of historic features and intriguing details, such as a trench under the ground floor, which they believe may be linked to the Resistance. They’re just starting out on the renovation and hope to move full time in a few years. It was so lovely to see their enthusiasm and excitement for the future. I hope we can share their story further down the line when the work has been completed. It was also great to catch up with exhibitors, most of whom write within these pages too. All experts within their field – whether agents, solicitors, financial advisers, architects or relocation specialists – they really do have their finger on the pulse of the French property market. I hope their advice helps you in your search – do let me know how you get on!

GET IN TOUCH! I love to hear your

stories of househunting and buying in France

EDITOR’S PICK A pretty three-bedroom cottage in Burgundy While researching my bargain hotspots article (p60), I fell in love with this cute cottage in the Nièvre department. On the edge of a hamlet, with lovely views of the hilly landscape, the property combines the atmosphere of the past with the comfort of today. There’s a spacious living room with a woodburning stove, a country kitchen with a Lacanche cooker and a large garden with space for a pool. In the traditional commune of Colméry, not far from Clamecy and Sancerre, the property is for sale at €185,000 (leggettfrance.com).
