Bienvenue!
Salut, mes amis, and welcome to this packed edition of France Today, in which our intrepid roving writers and committed culture vultures provide oodles of inspiration for your next trip to la belle France. For those of you seeking a road trip with a difference, we have two super sojourns to fi re your imagination. The fi rst takes the slow road from the outer suburbs of Paris all the way to the Riviera, eschewing the tolls and traffi c jams of the autoroute in favour of the traditional A-road Route des Vacances. The second is a sweeping, coast-to-coast odyssey – roughly parallel to the Pyrenees mountains – all the way from idyllic Collioure on the Med to Bayonne near the Atlantic seaboard. Whether you choose to take on these lengthy drives in their entirety (with some choice stop-offs, bien sûr) or simply pick a preferred section, there is plenty to enjoy for everyone.
Paris gets a starring role this issue. In addition to our usual Parisian Walkways look at a single street’s history, we also examine the iconic Eiffel Tower’s many fi lm
roles throughout the decades. Rest assured, Gustave’s greatest achievement hogs the on-screen limelight with effortless elegance and has never resorted to any on-set diva tantrums (as far as we know). Some great new additions for your pleasure this issue include esteemed writer Carol Drinkwater’s charming column from her home in the sunny south. Plus we are delighted to bring back a language puzzle page, which so many of you have requested. Test your linguistic prowess and knowledge of France with our crossword and then enter online for the chance to win a language course as a prize. Finally, we have an exclusive interview with legendary super-chef Alain Ducasse. Read about his formative years and mentors on page 66. I wish you all bon voyage… et à la prochaine!
