ARLES FOR ALL The Rencontres d’Arles is France’s
DISCOVERY WHEN IN ROME
The Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich join efforts to showcase an exceptional but little-known group of German artists who took to their easels and lenses to Rome during the 19th century. The arrival in France of such an ensemble of work, most of which comes from the collection of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, is unprecedented and only made possible while the great German institution is closed for renovations. The dialogue between painting and photography, and between the different views of the city, provides a sweeping view of the richness and diversity of the painters’ styles of this period, from neoclassical to romantic to early realism, through magnificent representations of landscapes, and also historical and intimist scenes.
