FUNDRAISING – Ideas for spring

Book-themed treasure hunt

Book Day (Thursday 5 March)

World

Hold this event after school so whole families can take part, and plan a route around your school or local area. Hide clues to the title of a popular children’s book along the route, e.g. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory might be a bar of chocolate, a football decorated to look like a blueberry, a picture frame decorated to look like a television, and so on. Players must work out what the book is from these items, and the correct answer means they can enter the school hall, collect their certifi cate and small prize and then take part in other activities: try a book tombola, name the teddy with literary-related names or a bookie cookie stall (book-shaped biscuits and other treats).

After-school story time Invite children (and families if you wish) to stay after school for story time. Choose a different story for each classroom and ask children to pick which they’d like to hear fi rst. After ten minutes, ring a bell for the children to move on to the next room. When they’ve had all their stories (we’ve found that three is a good number), gather everyone in the school hall for a hot chocolate, biscuit and a fi nal book.

Secret gift room

Run a fl oral gift room where pupils can select a gift for their mums or grannies. Approach local garden centres and ask for a deal (or donation) for your PTA on potted or cut fl owers. If they are cut, make sure they’re a variety that will last at least a week after purchasing. Daffodils are a great seasonal option. You can jazz them up by decorating the bunches or pots with ribbons, or creating tags that the children can write on and attach to their gift. Sell them on for a profi t of around £1 per item. Make sure you order enough by sending letters home beforehand, asking them to be returned by an agreed date with each pupil’s details, money and an indication of how many gifts are required.

Spa and shop evening Allow mums the opportunity to

indulge themselves with a spa and shopping event. Popular treatments include facials, manicures, pedicures, Indian head massages, Japanese face massages, Reiki, hair styling, refl exology and eyebrow- shaping. Book reputable therapists who will spend a couple of hours at your event for a fi xed fee, while you charge a small amount for entrance and refreshments, plus a cost per mini treatment. The time

between sessions can be spent browsing stalls from local businesses, and you

could incorporate a fashion show element, where volunteers help companies show off their products.

Hard-boil eggs and supply glue, paint and glitter or whatever materials you have available – check Pinterest for inspiration. Biodegradable glitter can be purchased from discoverbioglitter. com. Pupils can decorate their eggs during the school day and roll them the next day, once they’re dry. Pick a hill or create a slope and invite pupils to roll their eggs down, a few at a time. Keep a record of the distances and award prizes for the furthest egg roll in each year, as well as the best- decorated egg.

Bonnet parade

Invite pupils to create an Easter bonnet at home, paying a £1 entry fee to wear it to school and enter the bonnet parade. Hold the parade at the end of the day so parents can watch while also being responsible for their own children. Arrange a catwalk in the school playground so pupils can show off their creations, with music to add some atmosphere. Form a judging panel of staff members to keep it impartial, and get your compere to introduce each child as they take their turn. Encourage everyone to get involved by inviting less confi dent children to go on stage with friends or siblings. Award all participants with a certifi cate, and give Easter-themed prizes to fi rst, second and third place. Boost profi ts with a raffl e, chocolate tombola and name- the-bunny competition.
