Welcome T

he new year is traditionally a time of fresh starts and good intentions, and I know many of you are keen to reduce your

environmental footprint in 2020. To help you achieve this aim, we’ve devoted a special section of this issue to PTA sustainability. Find out how to make your summer fair greener on p41; discover how to make better use of second-hand and used items on p45; and read up on planet-friendly events held by other PTAs on p42. For more ideas about what you can do locally, join the conversation on your local county

Facebook group. Search @PTAgroupsUK to fi nd the group nearest to you. The days are already starting to get longer and soon the light will return

so get your PTA outside and take advantage of the beautiful world in which we live. To celebrate the coming of spring, we’ve asked PTAs across the country for their best outdoor fundraising stories and event ideas. Emma Openshaw of High Legh Primary School PTA says: ‘Each year our PTA runs a different outdoor family fundraiser and last year was our fi rst bikeathon.’ Read her story on p29. The Friends of Pendragon School took a different approach, holding a Make A Difference Day (p7) to paint and plant all around the school. ‘The sense of community spirit was amazing,’ says co-chair Liv Myson, ‘as was the head’s face when she saw what we’d achieved.’ Should you need further encouragement to venture forth, take inspiration from Lea and Garston CofE Primary School’s pig chase (p31) or Denby Free CofE School PTA’s fun run (p49). No more excuses! Finish off the Christmas chocolates, take a deep breath and dive into our spring issue. Have a wonderful term.
