Pancake Day
Valentine’s tuck shop
In many schools, Valentine’s Day will fall on the last day before half term this year, so take advantage with a non-uniform day and Valentine’s tuck shop to reward pupils for their hard work. Ask for Valentine-themed baked donations – you may want to post some inspiration on your social media feeds to encourage people to get baking. Pinterest is ideal for this.
Valentine’s Day
(Friday 14 February)
(Tuesday 25 February)
Pancake race
Instead of an egg-and-spoon race, why not have a pancake race, where pupils have to race with a pancake on their (non-breakable) plates without it slipping off? For older pupils, how about a pancake relay, with a pancake in a pan instead of a relay baton? Challenge pupils to flip the pancake before they can pass the pan onto the next person. Try using tortillas for a more sturdy option. Run a pancake kitchen alongside the race, giving pupils a range of toppings to choose from.
Sponsored pancake flip Love crafternoon
Invite pupils to attend a craft event where they can make gifts for loved ones. Set up the event after school in the school hall, and offer a range of activities. Some of our favourites include card-making, origami flowers, decorating photo frames and icing biscuits. Charge per item, and base the activities around the resources the school has available or items you can collect from parents, such as plastic or cardboard packaging.
Transform your traditional Pancake Day celebrations with a sponsored pancake flip. Challenge pupils to flip one pancake as many times as they can in one minute, or measure the amount of time it takes them to complete 100 flips. Find some lightweight frying pans suitable for children, and seek Scotch pancake donations from a local supermarket. Create a certificate for each child who takes part, and award prizes for the most flips.
Leap Year
(Saturday 29 February)
Leaping obstacle course
Put the ‘leap’ into leap year with a sponsored leaping obstacle course. Set the course up outside using the sports equipment available at your school. Work with your sports teacher to create obstacles for pupils to leap over. Send home letters and sponsor forms to parents. On the day, give pupils a set amount of time to complete their leaps and hop over as many obstacles as they can.
