PRIORITISING WORKPLACE WELLBEING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER


With what looks like a plan for restrictions to be slowly lifted over the coming months, many businesses will soon be making plans for coming out of lockdown, if they haven’t started already.


They’ll be considering how people can work safely and effectively whilst ensuring that any social distancing guidelines that remain are adhered to.


But how many of them will be thinking about the mental health and wellbeing of their employees when they return to work?


This challenging and changing landscape means that the mental health and wellbeing of staff has never been a more important consideration for employers and getting it right from the start could pay dividends down the line.


There has been progress in recent years amongst employers around mental health and wellbeing - and there is an increasing awareness that good mental health is as important as good physical health. But there is always room for improvement.


Employers know they need to be mindful of how they can support employee mental health post–lockdown but aren’t always sure of where to start. Communication is crucial to


alleviating any fears and anxiety employees may have about returning to work.


If your staff have little experience of handling or discussing mental health, working with a charity or organisation focused on this area can be a starting point to gain a greater understanding of the issues involved and how they affect individuals and businesses. It can also dispel any myths around mental health and lead to greater openness in the workplace.

CARING FOR COLLEAGUES AND COMMUNITIES DURING THE PANDEMIC


Concern about the health and wellbeing of our colleagues and the communities where we work during the Covid-19 crisis drove us to progress a pioneering programme of wide- ranging initiatives.


Realising that ‘we’re all in the same storm but we’re not in the same boat’ and proving that  we consulted our 17 partners and 200 staff.


and concerns about working from home such as anxiety, feelings of isolation and their ability to do the job.


Taking on board their feedback, we brought in a specialist workplace wellbeing team, The Vibrancy Hub, and staged regular health and wellbeing sessions online, kept in touch with each other each and every week (it’s good to talk!) and launched on the back of our survey a Cycle To Work scheme allowing colleagues to enjoy the health and mental 


Seeing the popularity of the scheme, we purchased a bike shelter and two bikes that staff can use for local client meetings (when the government says we can) or to take a much-needed break.


And because we appreciate that we’re all better together in these tough times, we strengthened the ties we’ve established with our local communities by continuing to work with charities and schools for the greater good.


Our programme began with us designing a staff survey to identify and address issues


We emerged from this exercise with our  having proven its credentials for caring and listening during Covid. Our caring attitude extends to our communities via initiatives such as virtual online Lunch and Learn sessions, where we donate the cost of a colleague’s lunch to local food banks including Blackburn Food Bank and progressing our partnerships with local schools such as Blackburn Central


High School by providing recycled laptops for disadvantaged pupils. Beever and Struthers  the need to support health and wellbeing for its people, while continuing to care for its communities and deliver services to its valued clients.
