University-Level Prospectus | HIGHER & DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS

HIGHER & DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS

An apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme designed by employers in the sector. It allows you to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with functional and personal skills required for your immediate job and future career. These are acquired through a mix of learning in the workplace, off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise and embed new skills in a real work context. This broader mix differentiates the apprenticeship experience from other training models.

Apprenticeships are available at intermediate and advanced level, as well as a growing number of higher and degree-level programmes.

Higher and degree apprenticeships were introduced to provide employers with the high- level skills most critical for growth. Developed by employers for employers, higher and degree apprenticeships enable businesses to train more of their employees in the high-level industry-specific skills that are critical for growth in the UK and internationally.

Higher and degree apprenticeships are available at Petroc at Levels 4 and 5. They combine work with study and may include a work-based, academic or combined qualification relevant to the industry. Levels 4 and 5 are equivalent to a HNC/Diploma or a Foundation Degree, Level 6 is equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree and Level 7 is equivalent to a Master’s Degree.

“I think if you want to progress your career and you have been in a job for quite some time, an apprenticeship is a great way to branch out while working. I don’t think there’s enough awareness about upskilling through apprenticeships. It’s opened up a lot of doors for me.”
