CTD FACULTY

Inspiring and Advocating

ELIZABETH COPPER has taught CTD classes for the past three years, including AWE weekend programs on sports and engineering in materials science and Spectrum’s Introduction to Biomedicine. In this popular Summer Program course, Elizabeth has enjoyed taking her students to the Museum of Science and Industry, holding class at Evanston’s Roycemore School, and visiting the labs on Northwestern’s campus. There, her students have gotten to engage with professors, see “real scientists doing real work, and talk to them in a way they understand.”

Elizabeth hopes her CTD students “expand upon their interest and experience in lab work in high school and college and understand the importance of research and following their passion.” One of her favorite CTD memories involves a student’s educational growth after the Summer Program: a year after helping him develop clarity in his science writing, she had the “exciting” experience of recognizing the former Spectrum student as he won a best in category award at the state science fair.

In addition to her work with CTD, Elizabeth has taught Honors Biology and Forensics at Chicago’s Lindblom Math and Science Academy for the past 10 years. Recently, one of her classes partnered with a major healthcare company to explore ways to address kidney disease and the challenges of medical care in the wake of a hurricane. Elizabeth values “being in the presence of nature: what you feel and see, and how do you interact with it.” She gardens, she’s brought students to a forest preserve to listen to frog calls, and she says she would take one of CTD’s zoology courses if she could. Elizabeth also reads in her spare time: “a good book is a good book,” she says, and she’s enjoyed everything from the recent young adult novel Children of Blood and Bone to bestsellers and mysteries.
