The Supremes: Judges & Judgments (Grades 6-8)
The Supreme Court has been at the center of recent, divisive debates in American culture, including corporate rights, digital privacy, travel bans, and more. In this course, learn how Justices are appointed, how the Court functions, how it reaches its decisions, and how Justices have approached interpretive issues. Students will examine some of the Court’s landmark cases, notable interactions and relationships between Justices, both friendly and strained, and the political struggle for control of the Bench. As a capstone, argue a case in front of your peers in a moot court. During this course, students will:
Understand the Supreme Court’s role in the larger American political system, its place in the separation of powers, and how political environments shape judicial policy
Explore the politics of judicial appointments, and their influence in shaping the landscape of American society
Prepare and argue an important case in front of a moot court
CTD PATHWAY: This course is designed for students who are interested in the law, politics, government systems, ethics, and debate. This course is good preparation for students interested in high school debate.
Taking Action: Leadership & Service (Grades 7-8)
Each year, more than three million Americans experience homelessness, 15 million are hungry, and one in five children lives in poverty. What can young people do about it? Taking Action: Leadership & Service integrates academic study with meaningful community service. Students divide time between the classroom and supervised hands-on service projects with community organizations such as homeless shelters, Head Start programs, or top political offices. Through academic research, small group work, and facilitated reflection, students investigate the root causes and proposed solutions of pressing social problems. Student leaders gain a deeper understanding of complex issues and learn how to make a difference. This course enhances communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities and prepares students for a lifetime of leadership and civic engagement. During this course, students will:
Identify and explain root causes of poverty and the effects of poverty on individuals and communities
Understand the dynamics between poverty, hunger, homelessness, education, power and privilege, and civic engagement
Apply asset-based assessments to understand the relationships between individuals and their communities
CTD PATHWAY: This course isfor students who want to learn more about the issues facing communities and develop leadership skills to make a difference on social issues they care about.

Youth Voice & Community Change (Grades 7-8)
What are the social issues that affect young people, and how can you affect change? Across the country, young people are working on issues that concern them, such as safe schools, healthy neighborhoods, mental health awareness, and youth homelessness. Examine issues that affect young people, meet with emerging leaders, and see firsthand how communities are addressing challenges in innovative ways. Learn how to make change about a cause that inspires you! During this course, students will:

CTD PATHWAY: This course is for students who want to learn more about the issues facing young people and their communities, and develop leadership skills to make a difference on social issues they care about.
Electronic Digital Instruments (Grades 6-8)
The first digital instruments were expensive, gigantic, and only considered suitable for “experiments” by avant-garde composers. Fifty years later, digital instruments fit in the palm of your hand and are the backbone of popular music. Using Novation Launchpad Controllers, learn to manipulate audio in Ableton Live and create digital music of your own while studying the history of computer music and the science behind your tracks. During this course, students will:
Learn the history and evolution of electronic music from novelty to mainstream pop
Understand the science of audio through the study of sound waves, EQ mixing, and more
Study music theory and compose original digital music incorporating advanced aspects of structure, harmony, and counterpoint
CTD PATHWAY: This course is designed for students with a strong interest in music and/or computer science and coding. Students will be prepared
for AP® Music Theory, as well as other coding and design courses.
