CTD SERVICE-LEARNING

Change Starts Here.

T

he Civic Education Project (CEP) is a leadership and civic engagement program based at Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development. CEP has been inspiring and training students to become active, engaged citizens and helping educators provide quality service-learning opportunities for over 20 years.

Service-learning is an approach to education that integrates meaningful community service with academic objectives for mutual benefit.

In the Classroom

Guided by CEP instructional staff, groups of 12-18 students participate in discussions, dialogues, and debates to analyze pressing social issues.

Learning goals and a curriculum framework allow students to make connections across disciplines, and integrate their service-learning experience with other academic learning.

Instructors challenge students to consider all sides of an issue. As critical thinking skills are sharpened, students are taught how to think, not what to think.

QUESTIONS THAT GUIDE LEARNING: What do people need from their communities?

What barriers to those needs challenge our neighborhoods and cities? How are those challenges being addressed, and by whom? What can you do to contribute to a community you’re a part of?

In Communities

Meaningful, eye-opening service opportunities help bring learning to life. Students engage with community members and leaders to learn about social issues facing communities, and innovative approaches to solving problems.

Students earn service hours towards school or other requirements while gaining valuable learning experiences.

Since CEP’s founding, more than 7,000 students have dedicated more than 190,000 total hours to service in partnership with over 1,000 nonprofit organizations and community leaders.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES THAT BUILD LEADERSHIP: Pack groceries for a family in need. Tour an innovative neighborhood medical clinic. Dialogue about immigration policy with local activists. Distribute hygiene kits from a mobile health outreach bus. Prepare and serve a meal at a shelter. Rally with local youth in support of after school programs. Be part of the solution.
