to improve (or address) issues we took on. I realized this is a mindset. It doesn’t always come naturally, so being mindful matters.

CTD CIVIC LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE ALUMNA 2018

WHAT WAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THING YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR CIVIC LEARDERSHIP INSTITUTE (CLI) EXPERIENCE? One of the most significant things I took away from CLI is the importance of questioning everything. A lot of times in programs or school, teachers have to teach a defined lesson plan or prepare students“for the test.” We might be told: “this is how it is,” or, “this is how it’s always been.” At CLI, we were taught to never be passive. We were always expected to question—to be actively engaged, always looking for ways

HOW HAVE YOU SOUGHT TO MAKE CHANGE IN YOUR OWN COMMUNITY AFTER CLI? I love where I live (Scarsdale, NY) and feel lucky to have grown up here. But I’ve been aware that—as with many areas—finding diversity can be challenging. I am now implementing a diversity program that brings together young adults like me at my temple with young adults at the predominately African American Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church in nearby Mt. Vernon, NY. Our goal: Discuss key social justice issues that affect our daily lives and then collectively take action to address them. First on the table: education and wrongful conviction.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE CIVICALLY ENGAGED? Kids my age are not short of opinions! We look at the world—our towns, schools, governments—and see thing things we want to change. It’s always important to stand up for one’s beliefs—and with so much change happening in our nation, new ideas are needed now. What we need to understand is that change should start with us.
