Puzzle Math (Grades 3-5)
How do you decide what strategy will work best in a given problem situation? Push your math skills to new levels! Discover new ways to strategize. Extend your thinking to approach and solve a variety of math and logic problems 24/7. Math stumpers, tangrams, Sudoku, and riddles are just a few of the puzzles participants strategize with as they advance their skills to higher and higher levels. During this course, students will:
Utilize and explain strategies used to solve math problems Develop math concepts such as symmetry, congruency, area, and geometry Apply problem-solving, logical thinking, and perceptual reasoning skills
CTD PATHWAY: This course is for students who love puzzles and problem- solving. It develops analytical thinking and is great preparation for future studies in higher level math, logic, and computer programming.
Advanced Reading: Literature (Grades 4-5)
How does the author communicate theme to the reader? Without details, Little Red Riding Hood would have just been a girl in a coat. Without plot, we may have never known what happened to the Three Little Pigs. Details and plot make the story and illustrate its theme, a theme which illuminates the point the author is sharing with the audience. Students master the importance of such details and plot, learning not only how to identify them, but to explain their significance to a story and its outcome. During this course, students will:
Identify the variety of elements authors use to engage a reader
Make connections between the text of a story and visual or oral presentations of the text Draw on specific details from the text to support interpretation
CTD PATHWAY: This course is for students who are ready to take their reading skills higher. It prepares high-ability readers to dive deeper into literature and expand their ability to tackle more difficult texts in more advanced language arts courses.
One of the aims of our program is to give students freedom, to give them independence of thought. CTD INSTRUCTOR
Human Body in Space (Grades 4-6) 18 ’’
How do organisms maintain a biological balance between their internal and external environments? As the human race sets their goals on space travel to Mars and beyond, what will the effects of space travel have on the body? Explore the physiological challenges astronauts face on space missions. Predict the additional complexities for future deep space missions, as well as design solutions to these challenges that not only enable future space exploration but also benefit life on Earth. During this course, students will:
Explore how the environment in outer space differs from Earth’s Explain why body systems are affected by space travel
Use scientific thinking to design a space suit that accounts for the challenges of space travel
CTD PATHWAY: This course is for students with a passion for space and problem solving. It is a great introduction to human biology and leads to further studies in physiology, astronomy, or astrophysics.
