Table of Contents INTRODUCTION
This Technical Support Document (TSD) provides information that complements the American National Standard (ANS) title ABYC EDU-1 On-Water Recreational Boating Skills–Power, also referred to as EDU-1, and went into effect on Nov. 12, 2015. EDU-1 was updated by ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council) using its ANSI standards maintenance process and published on Dec. 31, 2021. Changes made to the standard were incorporated within this updated TSD in June 2022.
This TSD includes information to help educators (course developers, instructors, trainers) learn about and use standards for on-water instruction in entry-level recreational powerboat operation. Detailed information about the standard is included, as well as benefits and guidelines for applying the standard to instructional programming.
EDU-1 and this TSD are part of a larger system of standards and other resources designed to help increase the level of safety and enjoyment boaters experience on our nations waterways. The standards and tools focus on increasing the level of quality and consistency of the instructional approaches used to deliver on-water skills-based education in recreational Power, Human-propelled and Sailboat operation, as well as the specific outcome skills boaters can demonstrate after participating in those different approaches.
Since EDU-1 and this TSD focus on the outcome skills of powerboat instruction, they are intended to be used in conjunction with American National Standard ABYC EDU-4 On-Water Recreational Boating Skills–Instruction, often referred to as EDU-4, and its corresponding TSD. EDU-4 and its TSD examine in detail the overall instructional approach used to deliver the outcome skills identified within EDU-1 and this TSD. Also, EDU-4 should be used in conjunction with the standards and TSDs for the Human-propelled and Sailing domains as well (see Figure 1).
