Akiba Lodge Anjozorobe ANJOZOROBE ANGAVO PROTECTED AREA, MADAGASCAR

Madagascar is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, with more than 80% of its flora and fauna endemic. Social company Sahanala was created in Madagascar in 2010; under its Akiba Collection tourism arm is a hospitality portfolio consisting of three lodges and one hotel. All lodges are located close to protected areas created and managed by Fanamby, Sahanala’s non-profit sister organisation, in partnership with rural communities. Akiba Lodge Anjozorobe, formerly called Saha

Forest Camp, was the first Akiba Lodge, built in 2009. Located 55 miles (a three-hour drive) from Antananarivo, the capital city, it’s nestled in a valley bordered by terraced rice fields typical of Analamanga region. Ten comfortable bungalows are perched on the hillside, offering breathtaking views of the rainforest. Akiba Collection is committed to sustainable

management and community-based tourism. At Akiba Lodge Anjozorobe, 95% of its staff come from nearby communities, 90% of the energy used is renewable and priority is given to local inputs and supplies, mainly vegetables and staple food

like cassava and taro. Guests can even participate in reforestation activities with community members who manage their plant nurseries. Sahanala’s economic model guarantees rural

communities’ farming income, including from vanilla, cashew nuts, pink pepper and ginger. The Akiba Lodges’ restaurant menus highlight organic Sahanala products, as well as local Malagasy cuisine. Guests can choose between six excursions

(including a night-time one) to discover unforgettable wildlife such as lemurs, birds and chameleons, as well as learn about medicinal plants still used by local communities. All activities are accompanied by guides from the community. The Anjozorobe Angavo Protected Area,

spanning more than 100,000 acres of high-altitude rainforest, is home to nine lemur species, including the famous indri, known for its morning singing calls. The lodge is open year-round, with the best visiting periods being April to May and September to November.

DON’T MISS Enjoy an early morning walk to meet the critically endangered black fur Indri, one of the largest living lemurs
